Whether you're driving far for spring break or planning a trip home soon, you might find yourself bored to death in a car for hours on end. It can feel never-ending and you may start to become restless. When you think about it, car rides are long periods of free time in which you can do all the things you have been neglecting, so try to think of it as a blessing rather than a curse. Staring out the window can only get you so far, so here are some tips for when you get bored during travel.
1. Play Roller Coast Tycoon 4.
I downloaded this app the other day and I am addicted. It's free and inspires an overwhelming amount of nostalgia. Nothing passes the time like building a couple roller coasters.
2. Sleep.
It is not the most exciting activity, but nothing passes the time more quickly than just passing out for half the trip.
3. Strike up a conversation with an old friend.
Nothing passes the time like texting someone who you've lost touch with. Reminisce, catch up, and reconnect while you have the time.
4. Google conversation starters and get to know your driving companions.
Maintaining steady conversation for the length of the trip may become difficult. Luckily, the internet exists and can turn anyone into a social butterfly.
5. Listen to new music.
It can be easy to cling to the same old songs you like, but car trips are the perfect time to edge out of your comfort zone and discover some new jams.
6. Text your mom.
Chances are you don't do it enough, and it'll definitely make her happy.
7. Experiment with some creative writing.
Writing can be cathartic and even fun, so give it a shot while you have the time! Design a character and live vicariously through them.
8. Doodle.
I am absolutely horrible at drawing, but nothing kills time like mindlessly taking pen to paper and seeing what happens. It can be incredibly relaxing.
9. Play horrible car games.
This is a last resort. These are absolutely terrible. If you get desperate, play bingo with license plates or play I Spy.
10. Contemplate mortality.
Car rides can really inspire deep thought. Take the time to put that to good use. Think about your existence and perhaps send yourself into an existential crisis, because, you know, what else are you going to do?
