*Sigh of Relief*

If you're on fall break, home from college, these are 10 feelings that you almost certainly are experiencing:

1. Regret.

Going two and a half hours away doesn't seem so bad until I have to make the drive to and from school. I always regret going to UMaine while driving on the highway for two and a half hours straight with nothing but trees for a view.

2. Relief

As soon as I walk through the door to my house I feel instant relief. Just knowing that I will be able to sleep in my own bed and eat home-cooked meals for the next couple days makes that drive so worth it.

3. Relaxed

I start to feel relaxed as soon as I sit around the fire with my family after eating a home-cooked meal. Just for the weekend I can forget about my loads of homework and studying I have to do once I go back to school.

4. Nostalgic

I always miss home while driving through town and seeing old restaurants and spots my friends and I used to hang out at. Seeing old friends from high school always brings back nostalgic feelings as well.

5. Unwelcome

The moment I walk through the door of our local breakfast place or house of pizza, I immediately feel like an outsider. My old group of friends was replaced by current high schoolers, and they do not want us back.

6. Unorganized

Not only did I bring home a huge duffel bag, but I brought along my big basket of laundry as well. Living out of a duffel bag for a few days makes it very hard to stay organized, and I always end up building up a huge pile of clothes on my bedroom floor.

7. Annoyed

Since I'm used to cleaning my room or doing my dishes on my own time, I hate being told when I have to do those chores. Although I love being around my family, I don't love not having the freedom that I have at school.

8. Uncool

Since I'm a big, bad college student, you would think I would feel so cool around the high schoolers, but instead I feel like the opposite. While visiting home, I'm back in high school territory, and they're the cool kids now.

9. Stressed

The night before heading back to school, reality sets in. I realize how much homework and studying I neglected to do throughout the weekend, and immediately I feel stressed to the max.

10. Thankful

While getting ready to head back to school, I can't help but feel sad to leave home again. I'll miss my bed, home-cooked meals, and most importantly my family. I'm so thankful to have a home that makes it so hard to leave each time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
