10 Facts You May Not Know About Me
Kayla Howell

That's me, in the middle, looking extra cheesy with the two best friends I could ever ask for. Besides feelings, I'm basically an open book when it comes to expressing who I am and the weird things about me. Some of these you may be aware of, and some will be new to you. I hope most of these are new facts for many of you readers and it gives you a good insight to my life. So without further ado, here are 10 facts you may or may not know about me!

1. I paint, but not just for recreation

Sure, I love to paint for fun, especially when I’m painting with my siblings, but I mainly paint for the mental relaxation. Whenever I get stressed, or my anxiety is starting to get out of hand, I usually pick up a brush and paint my feelings away. Yes, I freehand painted these ceiling tiles as well.

2. I used to hate hospitals

I always would try and get out of hospital visits for family members. I know, that sounds bad, but let me explain. I used to also have a fear of sick and/or dying people, and the overwhelming sadness and pain that would come over me walking in a hospital and seeing these people, it was too much for me. Especially when I would go see my family members. The people I felt didn’t deserve this sickness the most. It would take everything I had not to break down and cry in the hospital. I probably got over this around the age of 16, around the time when I decided to put that “sadness to use”, and do everything in my power to help as many people get better as possible.

3. I’ve never broken a part of my body/ nor have I had surgery

It’s true. The most damaged that’s been inflicted on my body was most recently when I sprained my ankle. Besides when I was younger and I banged my head on a windowsill, causing an indent on my face that looks similar to a dimple.

4. I’m actually not a big partier

Yes, you read that correctly. While I occasionally go out on Thursdays, that’s about the only time of the week that I’ll go out. I’ve lately been saving my weekends for homework. I’m also more of a small apartment get-together, than a massive house or frat party. It may be hard for some of you to believe, but I’m not as outgoing as I seem, at least in terms of partying.

5. My eyes change color

I mean it’s definitely nothing drastic, like from brown to blue. But there is a slight variation. And it’s usually from blue to green to gray. At this point I’m still not quite sure what causes the change, but I still find it cool nonetheless. I also find certain colors come out more depending on what color scheme my makeup is and how much or little I put on.

6. I’ll cry just by looking at and petting a dog

Literally. This is not a joke, this is not an over exaggeration. If you point out a dog to me around me or I see one, I lose it. I start whimpering and making weird noises, and the urge to run up to the dog and pet it and shove my face in its fur is so high. When the tears start flowing is when I do get to pet the dog and especially when I get to crouch down to their level and shove my face in their neck. Also, usually a couple cute pictures or videos of dogs sent to me will start the tears flowing as well.

7. I’ll laugh at just about anything

I laughed writing this fact down. It doesn't even have to be that funny, and I'll still laugh. Why? I'm not sure, but chances are I'll laugh at stuff I don't even think is hilarious.

8. I love chemistry

If I had the opportunity to have a chemistry class every day of the week, I'd be geeked. I always find something interesting every time and I love to engross myself in chemistry even when I'm not taking a course for it. I actually look up a fact a day that's chemistry related, and usually end up researching it for a solid 15 minutes.

9. I’m fairly certain I suffer from short-term memory loss

It's, I just, that's the only explanation I have. I'm that person that will be told to do something or asked a question, and chances are if I'm doing something, I'll forget about what you said. It's especially bad when I'm at work, and a customer asks for something, because I'll verify what they want with them at least 2-3 times before they get what they want because I simply can't remember.

10. I usually read about 2 books a week for fun

I LOVE to immerse myself in a good book, whether it's fiction or nonfiction. It's one of the ways I take a study break or just a break from reality in general. I love to visualize what's happening in each book in my head. Lately I've been reading motivational and self confidence books and it really helps to chance your outlook on life and yourself as a person.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
