10 Facts About Matt Denney

Odyssey has shaped my life, but it's definitely not the only thing that has shaped my life. I do have some pretty awesome facts about me that I think you should know.

1. I interned at Harvard this summer.

I interned as a resident assistant for Harvard's pre-college program. It's been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and it was my first time on the East Coast, so obviously the first thing I did was eat a lobster roll and have a Boston cream pie.

2. Dr. Seuss and I share the same birthday.

March 2 is definitely a day to remember. Throughout elementary school, we would always celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and eat green eggs and ham, but I would always wonder why no one was saying happy birthday to me!

3. I am a gold card member at Starbucks.

I mean this honestly, I really love Starbucks, and I am a gold card member. I gotta have my venti iced coffee, or I can't function.

4. I am in two honor societies on campus.

I am a proud member of Omicron Delta Kappa, which is the National Leadership Honor Society and Alpha Psi Omega, which is the National Theatre Honor Society.

5. My favorite Disney Movie is Hunchback of Notre Dame.

It is the perfect balance of light and dark themes. It is also one of my favorite musicals that I've seen, every time I watch the Disney movie or see the show, it just continues to get better.

6. My favorite musical is "The Last 5 Years"

"The Last 5 Years" tells the story of Cathy and Jamie and their relationship over five years, Cathy in reverse chronological order while Jamie in forward chronological order. It is an amazing blend of art, music and storytelling.

7. Hershey's cookies and cream candy bars are everything.

I could eat them all day, and be completely content with all life.

8. "How I Met Your Mother" is the No. 1 TV show.

Yellow umbrellas, self-fives and Canada. All three are just some of the insiders that encompass "How I Met Your Mother."

9. I want to be a high school theater teacher.

If you know me, you know that I want to be a theater teacher in the future. Just the art of actually teaching others about the arts and making an impact on the community and the education field is just aspiring to me.

10. I've been with the Odyssey for over a year.

OK, I know I said other than Odyssey, but, believe it or not, I have stuck with the Odyssey as a writer and social media director for over one year, which is a huge deal. I was one of the first writers hired back in July 2015 in my chapter at the University of Nevada, Reno. I feel like I'm finally sitting at the Thanksgiving table with my Odyssey fam, and that's a place I intend to be for a while and watch our family grow.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
