10 Expectation and Realities of College

Remember when you used to dream about what college would actually be like? Now that I've experienced it first hand, here are 10 expectations that I had versus the reality of it all.

1. You dream of meeting your soul mate at college. You are sure that your dream guy is on this very campus with you right now. Instead…

There’s a lot of random guys always looking for any chance they can get. Don’t get me wrong there is totally a chance that you may find your Mr. Right at college, it happens to many people. But trust me when I say there will be a lot of those guys you have to brush off your shoulder.

2. Gaining the freshman 15 is not an option. You have confidence in yourself that you’re better than that…

Let’s get real. We’re in college and we’re broke. Our meal plan consists of McDonalds or Taco Bell at least once a week. If its not fast food college kids are throwing their money to, it’s the University’s food and I think every college student would agree with me that it’s definitely not much to fill our stomachs.

3. It’s just like the movies. Everyday is a party. But really…

Well, actually, there are students always looking to party. If they want to throw down, they’ll make it happen. Ultimately the decision is yours, if you’re anything like me… you’ll find Netflix more entertaining than going out every day of the week.

4. You didn’t study at all in high school and came out of high school okay. It’s the same thing in college…

WRONG. Not studying in college is actually asking for failure. College is 100% completely different than high school. You’re learning so much in all your classes with actually so little time. If you don’t put the effort in your school work, your grades will surely show.

5. You have so much free time. You know that in no time, you’ll be rocking hardcore abs.

If you have any free time, you’re most likely doing something wrong. There is always something you could be doing. While I do believe that staying fit in college is important, there is little to no time to work out because your work will continue to pile on as you go through the semester.

6. Your parents will still hook you up. They paid for everything for 18 years and they don’t plan on stopping now…

If your parents are still paying for you in college, Congratulations! You aren’t really considered a college student. Most of us experience this. It’s hard to keep your money budgeted in college. Textbooks are crazy expensive and all of our money is going to food…

7. 8AMs really aren’t as bad as people say. By doing this, you’ll have so much time throughout the day to do whatever you want.

If you aren’t a morning person, I’d advise you to stay away from 8ams as much as possible. I really didn’t know that I wasn’t a morning person until my freshman year when I had an 8am three times a week. I probably sound dramatic, but believe me, it’s way harder than it sounds.

8. College is seriously a fashion show. You have to look your best at all times…

It’s the complete opposite. No one cares what you’re wearing because we all are in college. We’re tired. We lack many hours of sleep and getting up an extra 30 minutes to get ready just doesn’t sound too good when you’re laying in bed.

9. You were so popular in high school, you’re not worried about making friends…

I hate to be the one to break it to you but in college no one cares if you were popular or not in high school. It just does not matter. You’re in a completely different environment and it’s up to you to make effort to make new friends.

10. It won’t go by that fast…

Well, it actually does. Before I knew it, I’m about to Senior year of college. I talk a lot about how I’m so ready to be a graduate. I know me, I’m just being the exaggerated college student we all are. I’ll miss it. I can’t ever lie about this experience; it’s been a hell of a ride. Hold onto your memories. It is an experience that gives students the opportunity to find the best version of themselves. It’s what you make it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
