Growing up in a small town, you start to learn the best places to eat. At this point in my life, I've developed some bias and have picked some of my favorites with the help of some opinions by friends. I hope your trip to the Connecticut shoreline is one to remember and I hope, more so, that you eat some great food!

1. The Whistle Stop - Deep River, CT

This is one of the small town's best. Serving only breakfast and lunch, it's tough to get a seat in this cozy corner of Deep River if you're here during morning rush hour! But if you're lucky enough to catch yourself a spot, you won't regret indulging in decadent food, herbal teas, and great conversation with strangers who become friends.

2. Simon's Marketplace - Chester, CT

If you're looking for a hip atmosphere and a little something to take home to someone you love, look no further than Simon's. Loved by local students and college kids returning at any time of the year, Simon's offers an array of prepared foods, sandwiches, backed goods, and fun trinkets to bring home with you! Whether it's the Thanksgiving sandwich or a tortellini salad (or those half priced cookies and muffins during happy hour), Simon's is a favorite for everyone, near or far. But don't forget to grab a salted baguette ("crack bread" as the locals call it) before you head out!

Note: In the summer, you can also find Simon's Marketplace at the Deep River Landing in a smaller, more convenient set up!

3. Essex Coffee and Tea Company - Essex, CT

Tucked away in the small town of Essex is Essex Coffee and Tea Company. This small establishment houses some of the best and most unique drinks on the shoreline. Whether you're craving an iced coffee or smoothie, cookie or brownie, muffin or gluten-free option, the owners of Essex Coffee and Tea Company are there to help. It's a small, cozy, atmosphere and is perfectly located just minutes away from the docks of downtown Essex and the Connecticut River Museum where you can enjoy scenic views with your beverage.

4. Killingworth Inn & Cafe - Killingworth, CT

A townie favorite, the Killingworth Inn & Cafe is located on a rotary in Killingworth, CT. With some of the best beef tips, drinks, and loaded baked potatoes, the owners are constantly pushing the limits of how to better their food and make their environment friendly to all. A perfect dinner destination for lively conversation and delicious meals!

5. Jack Rabbits - Old Saybrook, CT

Jack Rabbit's is your typical hole-in-the-wall eatery in downtown Old Saybrook. Their burgers are delicious, wings are spicy (I recommend "Rated R"), buffalo fries are unlike any other, and their hot dogs and lobster dogs are impressive. Not to mention their array of salads and wonderful staff. Newly renovated, Jack Rabbit's is a must for anyone looking for a quick meal and quality food.

6. Mindy K Deli Catering LLC - Old Saybrook, CT

Where to start about Mindy K's... Yum! Everything on the menu from their specials to their everyday options are tasty enough and memorable enough to make your taste buds water just thinking about it. This little eatery combines cultures, mixing typically New American cuisine with Thai food, taking concepts like buffalo chicken and rolling them into a "Sushy Roll": white rice, blue cheese (or ranch), and buffalo chicken, in a wrap. Maybe Pad Thai is something that interests you a little more? Come down to Mindy's and try it!

Note: Mindy K's is Cash Only (they have an ATM).

7. Vault Coffee Roasters - Mystic, CT

Vault Coffee offers everything from basic coffee and beverage options to drinks like the "Nutty Irishman," a play on mocha iced coffee with an Irish twist. Located in Olde Mystick Village, Vault Coffee is a must if you're visiting Mystic for the day or are in the area and need a little lift.

8. Mystic Market Kitchen and Eatery - Old Saybrook, CT

Mystic Market is the perfect sport for your mid-work-day lunch. Prepared foods and sandwiches, it's everything you can ask for, and you can even pick up dinner for later! Taking the place of past restaurants, Mystic Market is a must for your next lunch date.

9. Lobster Landing - Clinton, CT

Famous for their lobster rolls, Lobster Landing is a must for anyone looking for a quick summer meal. They're said to be the best around, but I'll let you be the judge!

10. Johnny Ad's Drive In - Old Saybrook

Johnny Ad's is considered to be exceptional because of their fresh seafood and quick service. A small building off of Main Street in Old Saybrook, Johnny Ad's offers everything from lobster to clam strips, and a crowd favorite - fish and chips. Now that's what I'd call a happy summer!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
