The animal kingdom is a nature's work of art. Each and every creature is unique and has adapted to survival through thousands of years of evolution, and yet we are losing more and more species every year. Extinction is a natural process. Naturally we are supposed to lose one to five species a year. Would you believe that scientists are now estimating the planet is losing 1,000-10,000 times the background rate of species each year? Dozens of species are being wiped off the face of existence everyday and we don't even know it. Instead of destroying our planet and killing these animals through events such as deforestation, poaching, global warming and rising sea levels we should be trying to save them and our planet. We all share one home. Here are some of the planet's most endangered species.
1. Amur Leopard
According to the most recent surveys, only about 57 of these creatures roam the wild.
2. Black Rhino
Only about 5,042-5,455 individuals reside in the wild.
3. Cross River Gorilla
Categorized as the world's greatest ape, only about 250-300 of these creatures live in the wild.
4. Hawksbill Turtle
It is estimated that there are around 20,000-23,000 nesting female left in the wild.
5. Javan Rhino
Only 60 of these rhinos are currently surviving in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia.
6. Leatherback Turtle
There are an estimated 34,000-36,000 nesting females.
7. Mountain Gorilla
There are about 880 individuals in the wild today according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.
8. Pangolin
There is little information available for the population for any of the 8 pangolin species due to its rarity ing the wild.
9. Saola
In 2001 it was estimated that there was only a population of 70-700 of these creatures.
10. South China Tiger
Considered to be "functionally extinct", this tiger species hasn't been seen in the wild in over 25 years.
