High school theatre and community theatre are the best. You get to do what you love, express yourself, and put together a production, all while you spend time with cast-mates who are very likely to become your friends.
The bond formed between cast-mates is like no other, because we relate to each other on a spiritual level. We can all relate to the feeling of nailing a dance combo (or not nailing a dance combo, once in a while), the heartbreaking feeling of erasing blocking from our scripts when a show has come to a close, and the famous tech week struggle, and this helps us understand each other deeply. There are certain emotions all high school theatre performers know too well. Here are 10 of them.
1. When you rehearse with a full set for the first time.
Trying not to be mesmerized by the beautiful, brand new scenic backdrop. Ugh. The struggle.
2. When you're on the way to an audition.
Hoping the man stopped next to you at the red light thinks you're just having a super emotional chat with your bestie on speakerphone.
3. When someone hasn't been paying attention during choreo and, as a result, has no clue what they're doing.
4. When you're sitting in history class and all you can think about is revolting.
If only your fellow classmates were dancers. What a fantastic flash mob this could make.
5. When your friend hands you the aux cord in the car.
Do my friends not realize that I am enlightening them with the cast recording of "Hamilton"? Um, this is bumping driving music, and it's educational.
6. When you spot someone writing in a rented script in pen.
I don't even know how to comfort you, at this point.
7. When it's tech week, but you have mass amounts of homework to do.
Do my teachers not understand that tonight we're doing our first full run through with costumes and to be honest I can't even think about anything else until it's over?
8. When those tech rehearsals take place on some super late weeknights.
9. When someone refers to rehearsal as "play practice."
Yeah, play practice was great! How were basketball auditions?
And finally...
