As fall approaches with move-in day hot on its heels, college students everywhere anticipate the day they can walk into their new living spaces and decorate it in a fashion that fits their personality. A problem many students face is the cost of most decorations or the unoriginal nature of the items you might find in a store. To help remedy these problems, I've compiled a list of ten DIY dorm decor ideas to help make your room unique without forcing you into bankruptcy.

1. Terrarium

Terrariums are a great way to bring life to your dorm while also adding a funky decoration.

2. String Art

Whether you choose to create a cute anchor or an image of your home state, string art is a cute, inexpensive way to decorate your dorm room.

3. Custom Lamp Shade

A custom lamp shade is an easy, cheap way to tie your room's decor together seamlessly.

4. Custom Head Board

Many dorms come without a headboard, so creating one is a cheap, easy, quick way to elevate your room's decor.

5. Mason Jar Vase

With the popularity of mason jar's at a high currently, these vases are a great way to bring life to your dorm while also adding a touch of femininity and beauty to your space.

6. Bottle Nebula

Bottle nebula is a great, inexpensive way to remind yourself to shoot for the stars and it also adds a magical look to your room's decor.

7.Dream Catcher

As you leave home for the first time and are faced with so many new people, homesickness is likely to make itself known. If your homesickness presents itself in the form of nightmares, a whimsical, cute DIY dream catcher is the perfect solution to setting your mind at ease while you beautify your dorm.

8. Ping Pong String Lights

These string lights add a glow to your room that creates a fairy tale-like reprieve from the stress of classes and homework.

9. Lighted Picture Display

If you are struggling to find a cute way to display your memories from home, consider a lighted picture display which creates the same mystical atmosphere in your room as the ping pong string lights, while also reminding you of your loved ones.

10. Shoe Box Charging Station

As anyone who has ever owned any piece of technology knows, cords are easily tangled and power strips are ugly. To remedy both of these solutions, consider a shoe box charging station to keep your cords in one place and hide the eyesore that is your power strip--it's easy and cost-effective.

As the beginning of the school year approaches, and with it the opportunity to decorate or redecorate your space, I hope these ideas can help you create a neat, organized, visibly-pleasing dorm space without completely emptying your wallet!
