Growing up in my house, a strong emphasis was put on Disney movies and that was the same with many of my other friends. I thought it was because my mom saw how much they entertained us; I mean who does not want a happily ever after? Now that I am older and have watched these movies back, I understand why there was such an emphasis on showing these films. These ten examples showcase the secret life lessons Walt Disney implemented into his movies.
1. "Peter Pan"
Realistically, there was no way we would ever make it to Neverland and hang out with the Lost Boys or fight Captain Hook; however, Peter Pan taught the importance of hanging on to your inner child and enjoying life.
2. "Aladdin"
Despite there not being magic carpets to fly on in real life (even though transportation would be a lot easier), this movie taught the importance of never letting status, money or fame compromise true love.
3. "Beauty and The Beast"
Belle really promoted the idea that literature was important in a time where it was frowned upon for girls to read. Also, she highlighted the idea to not judge someone based on their appearance but love them for who they are on the inside.
4. "Mary Poppins"
Like Mary herself said, “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” The movie also focuses on the importance of valuing the relationships within a family.
5. "The Little Mermaid"
Ariel’s desire for another world and it being completely different when she got there reveals that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. When Ursula took Ariel’s voice, it taught how important having a voice is and using it.
6. "Toy Story"
There was a reason the hit song from this movie was “You Got A Friend In Me” because this movie shows the importance of friendship. Yes, Woody and Buzz had disagreements, but they never let their argument overshadow their friendship.
7. "Mulan"
Besides taking a risk in order to protect her family (also important), Mulan taught girls around the world that they could do anything they desire and should not let their gender be the deciding factor in anything.
8. "Pinocchio"
Once Pinocchio became an actor, he could stay a real boy if he was “brave, truthful, and unselfish.” Anyone who watched the movie knew he had a lying problem because he was infamously known for his nose growing. This educated many young children on the significance of telling the truth.
9. "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs"
Despite Snow White’s exterior beauty, she demonstrates that inner beauty is what truly matters. This is a lesson many girls in this upcoming generation need to understand.
10. "Cinderella"
Although Cinderella overcame the obstacle of living with her crazy stepmother and stepsisters, she stood up for herself when it came time to. She did not let negative people have a hold on her life and that is what this movie teaches‒ independence. Also, the key phrase Disney holds on to till this day that dreams really do come true.
Here’s to you, Walt Disney, for not only inspiring multiple generations but for teaching us at a young age the importance to value life. Also, for showing us the significance of life lessons.
