10 Creative Ways to Spend Snow Days

1. Treat yo’ self to a new hot chocolate recipe

Who doesn’t like hot chocolate on a snow day? There’s a lot of ways to fancy up your traditional cup of winter wonder, though, besides just marshmallows! Try adding a dollop of maple syrup, a peppermint stick, or a teaspoon or two of peanut butter to spruce up your go-to snow day beverage. You never know what new addition may rock your world -- and your tastebuds… so go get chocolate wasted!!!!!!!!!!

2. Participate in a snow war

In the most stressful of weeks in college, sometimes a snow day can make all the difference and rescue your mental health in the nick of time. To work off some of that pent-up academic stress that comes with the impending and dreaded “finals week,” an intense snowball war may be just what the doctor ordered. So gather up some pals or a group of people on your floor who are up for a chilly challenge and have some pure snow-filled fun while you work off some of that college-induced stress. You won’t regret it!

3. Have a winter wonderland-themed photoshoot

We’ve all seen those cute photos of girls in their cozy knitted mittens and pom-pom studded hats prancing around in the snow or blowing some flakes out of their cupped hands while smirking at the camera. Be honest, you’ve probably thought about taking some of those photos yourself -- perfect for your next Facebook or Instagram post. So grab a friend to play your photographer and snap a few shots in the pretty blanket of snow on campus! All you need now is an artsy pun about snow to caption your favorite photo with!

4. Throw a movie marathon complete with blankets and snacks

Is it just me or does a wintry white landscape outside make you want to curl up like a little burrito in thick blankets and watch every movie in your Netflix list until the sun goes down? Whether you decide to spend the day marathoning Disney movies with your roomie or grab a few friends in your dorm and watch some holiday films together, make sure you have plenty of warm blankets to cuddle up with and some popcorn and pretzels to munch on.

5. Create a personalized snowman

Everyone probably knows how to make a traditional snowman… but have you ever thought of some ways you could change up the traditional “Frosty the Snowman” look? Ever thought of what Frosty would like if he were a college student? Maybe he’d have a Bud’s Light in his hand or a baseball cap backwards on the top of his head… hey, there’s no rules here!

6. Get artsy with a craft

Pinterest is perfect for a variety of reasons; one of which being the oodles of craft ideas you can find on it. If you and your roomie or friend find yourselves bored, search Pinterest for some fun winter crafts that you could occupy your time with to decorate your room or get in the spirit of the season. Remember to turn on some music to jam along to while you guys assemble your creations.

7. Try your hand at a new game

Cards Against Humanity is my personal favorite, but there are many card games you can play with only one simple deck of cards… and of course, a few bored friends looking for a fun way to spend their snowed-in afternoon. Try letting each person pick a different game to play, and by the end of the afternoon, you’ll probably pick up at least a new game or two to show your relatives at the next family gathering.

8. Use the opportunity to make a snow cone

In college, you probably don’t have much for a kitchen; if you’re like me, you probably just have a simple microwave and mini fridge. Well, thanks to the fresh layer of snow resting on the ground, you can walk outside with a cup, scoop up some snow, and then pour some pop or juice over it. Just make sure you find some that's pure white — no yellow fluffy stuff (ew)!

9. Read that book you’ve been eyeing for awhile

Once I started college, I sort of gave up on finding time to read “for fun.” Nowadays, I read regularly — but it’s always school-related. So, when a free day happens upon you and classes are canceled, why not take the day to pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read for awhile? Reading for fun is important, too, and a snow day is the perfect opportunity to do that.

10. Learn a new skill

Luckily, we live in a day and age when YouTube is full of tutorials and videos that can teach you how to do something with just your computer and internet access. So, if you’ve been telling yourself for years you wanted to take up knitting, or that you’ve been trying to find time forever to start learning how to play guitar, why not use your snow day? It’s a great way to be productive with your day off, and then you don’t have to worry about putting it off any longer.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
