10 Creative Date Nights in Lubbock

“Lubbock is boring”, said every college kid living in Lubbock, ever. I know that if living here single is boring in itself, so dating might see a bit difficult. I remember being asked on my first date a week after moving to Lubbock and he asked the dreaded question “where do you want to go?" I was thinking about the drive into Lubbock and in the back of my mind I thought, oh well, we can have a dust storm picnic in the middle of nowhere because this place S U C K S. This was three years ago. Overtime I learned that Lubbock has some secret gems that are going to force you to bring out your fun side, use your imagination, and be a little romantic. You'll have some of the best dates of your life. I thought I'd take the chance to give you a few.

1.First Friday Art Trail

This is widely known to Lubbock Locals and College students. On the first Friday of every month Lubbock hosts an art trail in the Lubbock Cultural District.( Yes, Lubbock has an Art District I was surprised too). The art trail has trolleys that will take you around town, food trucks, and music here and there. So, get ready to take a romantic walk under that Texas Tech, Lubbock Sunset while having meaningful conversation...Tell me that's not a fantastic date, Lubbock has that for you!

2.Hell's Gates

A Creepy little place to go for those who like haunted dates. I had a picnic out there once. I thought I would hate it, but it was one of the best dates that I had ever had. He told me scary stories and we had conversations of “paranormal experiences” I enjoyed this date because it opened the door to conversations I wouldn't have had on a normal date. The scenery was a conversation starter that led us far away from the simple, “what's your major conversation”. Plus, I am a sucker for picnics.

3.Walters World of Pets

Ok, so Lubbock does not have a Zoo… all my outdoorsy people take a deep breath, I know it hurts. But, Lubbock does have a Walters World of Pets, where you can see some of the most exotic animals that can survive in the desert weather. All for 3 dollars!

Clearly this is not a Zoo so you can’t stay all day but you can have a follow up activity.

Like Dinner at Campisi's, a romantic dim-lit little restaurant on the south side of town. After letting your inner kid playing with exotic's you can “adult” it up by dressing classy and eating semi-expensive cuisine.

4.Kite Flying at Maxi Park

AGAIN, I am a sucker for outside dates and I know a lot of other girls are, plus Lubbock's weather can be really nice! There is a perfect wind there. Run, let loose, and be a kid. I enjoy park dates even as an adult because it let’s me know if my partner will take himself too seriously. You can learn so much about the other person ( in addition to having a little fun) when your dates are actual activities rather than simply talking over food.

5.Day At Cactus Alley

This place is a Diamond that is buried. How does no one in Lubbock know about this slice of heaven? Every time I go with either a friend or someone I am dating it is usually their first time and they are so astounded that Lubbock has something so very amazing. There are tea/coffee shops here. A botanical shop, a Winery, and more. Cactus Alley has a small pond in the center of it all with Albino fish in it. They color the water, usually with the seasons, and it is mesmerizing. Lose yourself in a conversation over this colorful pond. The setting is very relaxing and romantic.

Follow up with real food by taking a 2 minute walk to Gilbert's next door.

6.Romantic Stay-Cation at the Woodrow House

A stay-cation date is such an intimate date. I spent my time watching movies, eating and playing board games while talking about my life goals. It’s like a night over but just you two ,if you have roommates and it's much more intimate.

7. Trapped the escape room

Yes, Lubbock has one! This is an adrenaline pumping date. You get to see your partners wheels turn and what type of person they are under stress, even if it is “fun stress.” There is a bit of bonding that happens from playing trapped together because teamwork necessary to be freed. Plus, there is the conversation starter and a memory made. Wow, that was easy!

8.Mackenzie Park

All the way on the East side of town is a huge gem called Mackenzie. Mackenzie has a large walking trail, a high rock to sit on and climb with a waterfall, a lake that you could paddle boat in, and more. Near the back of Mackenzie park there is a railroad that you can walk across and see natures beauty. Also, in the back of the park, near the tracks are loads of art works created by Lord who knows. Some of the work out there is actually quite astounding. There is much more uncharted territory there but in all the times that I have visited, that is as far as I have gotten. And remember, I am and outdoorsy dating person, so I have been to Mackenzie quite a few times.

9. McPherson Cellars

I am only 21, but I do enjoy “adulting” on occasion. McPherson is the place you unwind under low lights and learn about your partner, while slowly drifting away into each glass. Excuse me I had a flashback of how awesome this place is. You should go!

10.Escape Your Body

“Stranger things” it up by going to the isolation pods right here in Lubbock. Go to separate pods, drift away so you won't be too nervous when you're coming back and, if this is your first date...WHAM you already have conversation, talk about your separate experience together.

Follow it up with Drinks at a Gas Light, the adult bar. Gas Light is located near the mall and has a nice patio setting on a lake. Drift away under the moon, with smooth drinks selections, food, and music.

Lastly, research, Lubbock can be a boring place, if you don't look for anything and if you don't have the right person to do anything with. You may think Lubbock does not “have a lot” but it has many wonders including the ability to make you fall in love!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
