If you're like me and have family members, friends or acquaintances with differing political views, the holiday season may be a difficult time to find good cheer. It seems like every conversation since the election has lead into a discussion concerning the GOP, electoral college or President-elect Donald Trump. These conversations can be emotionally draining, and the holiday season should be filled with thoughts as happy as a sweet potato casserole.
In order to avoid having these conversations and feelings, follow my talking points to ensure dialogue that cannot turn into a political message.
1. "Have you ever read the book 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom?'"
"A told B and B told C" not to discuss politics with me.
2. "Whats better, sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes?"
The real age old debate.
3. "Did you catch that Youtube video of the dancing cat?"
I like to move it, move it away from the topic of politics.
4. "What do you know about the process of wine fermentation?"
Wild.
5. "Did you know that the Year 3000 by the Jonas Brothers is a cover?"
I've been to the year 3000 and no one talked about the 2016 election.
6. "Isn't it crazy that near-sighted people can't see far?"
It is counterintuitive.
7. "Why is 'Y' sometimes a vowel, but sometimes not?"
A, E, I, O, U and SOMETIMES Y? WHY.
8. "Where do squirrels poop?"
But think about it. Have you ever seen it?
9. "What's Clay Aiken up to?"
And does anyone even remember Reuben Studdard?
