10 Constructive Procrastination Activities

We all procrastinate on things. Here are some ways to procrastinate that are sort of helpful.

1. Clean your room.

This can range from picking a few shirts off your floor to a massive spring-cleaning style haul complete with redecorating. It always helps to have your things in order when tackling a big project (or not).

2. Watch YouTube videos about a topic of interest (no matter how obscure).

Maybe you want to learn how to play the guitar. Maybe you’re wondering how thrift shoppers find such cool stuff all the time. Maybe you want to find that weird song you and your friends loved in middle school. YouTube is the best place for those kinds of things

3. Talk to friends you haven’t heard from in a while.

It can be nice to catch up with people after not speaking for a while. Who knows, they might be procrastinating on something too!

4. Start watching a new TV show.

The invention of Netflix, Hulu, and other similar services has made it super easy to find an old TV show and watch episodes on your own time and at your own speed, especially if that speed is 6 episodes in one sitting.

5. Plan a party that may not even happen.

Thinking through all the details required to host a successful party can be tons of fun. Even if you don’t end up actually making that event a reality, it’s still super cool to imagine.

6. Look up hair styles and colors that you would never try on yourself.

While your job or other circumstances may prevent you from trying that undercut or bright blue ‘do that you like, having that board on Pinterest never hurt anyone.

7. Explore your hometown.

If there are any cool sites around your town that you haven’t visited yet – like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant or a nice park – then play tourist for the day and go check it out!

8. Check your bank account.

It’s always good to know where you stand financially. Make sure all of your bills and other responsibilities are taken care of, then maybe set a little extra aside for yourself.

9. Take a nap.

Sleep is good for you. If you don’t get a lot of sleep at night, then you might not be on top of your game during the day.

10. Read a book.

Odds are, you have at least one book in your room that you haven’t read. Try to get through at least one chapter.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
