10 Confusing College Terms Explained

Mixer (noun):

A social gathering held between two social clubs.

Used in a sentence: I cannot wait for the club soccer and club baseball mixer!

Pregame (noun):

The pre party before the actual party.

Used in a sentence: I need to nap before the pregame or else I won't be able to rally.

Rally (verb):

The act of awakening out of a sluggish state to party.

Used in a sentence: I have an 8 am but I'm going to rally tonight.

Formal (noun):

An event typically held by sororities where females dress in nice attire and take a date to a nice venue.

Used in a sentence: I can't find a dress or a date for formal!

Date Party (noun):

A less "formal" event where sorority or fraternity members are encouraged to bring a date.

Used in a sentence: Ugh! Who am I going to bring to the date party?

Quad (noun):

A green, field-like gathering area usually in the middle of campus, where students can be seen relaxing between classes.

Used in a sentence: Do you guys wanna eat lunch on the quad today?

Day Drink (noun):

A day party, usually hosted by fraternities, that includes activities ranging from beer pong and corn hole to slip 'n slides.

Used in a sentence: Should I wear my bathing suit to the day drink?

Syllabus Week (noun):

The first week of the semester when professors give out their syllabi and don't assign homework.

Used in a sentence: Syllabus Week is the only week of the semester where it is socially acceptable to go out every single night.

Spirit Jersey (noun):

Those baggy, sweatshirt-like shirts that identify a sorority girl from a mile away.

Used in a sentence: My spirit jersey looks so cute with my j-crew vest!

Late Night (noun): a meal consisting of tots, burgers, dogs and even eggs and bacon provided by Elon University for drunk students between the hours of 11p.m. and 2a.m.

Used in a sentence: Guys I'm drunk, let's go to Late Night.
