10 Common Misconceptions About Having A Girlfriend
Zac Orr

I'm sure once or twice we've all been advised that having a girlfriend was really not what was best for us. Growing up, there was always someone telling us something like, "Just wait, you'll have plenty of time later in life for a girl." or, "You need to enjoy your freedom while you can." We've all been there before. It makes for a very disappointing conversation, especially when you have already had your eyes on someone for a while. It almost crushes you. However, like many before them, people do not really listen to these statements and go on to try and impress their crush. Then somehow, they get the girl. I was that person once. I questioned whether or not I could handle it along with everything else that comes with life. Looking back, I can assure you that one of the best decisions I ever made was to find someone that would grow into my girlfriend. Once this phenomenon occurred, a chain reaction of happiness and success revealed itself in my life. I was instantly lifted to new heights. All of a sudden, I had a support system like no other. I felt as if I could conquer anything as long as at the end of the day I still had my wonderful girlfriend to confide in. I was beginning to learn a major life lesson. The lesson that opening up to someone and letting them get close wasn't bad at all. It helped me. In today's day and age, people are hesitant to get a girlfriend based on common misconceptions society has placed on the concept. I have constructed a list of a few of these misconceptions to shed some light on the subject.

1. Girlfriends take up all of your time!

If you choose to get a girlfriend, they can take up a lot of time, but not all of your time. If you're with the right person, they will understand that you both have lives and responsibilities to take care of. In a relationship, you are going to spend a lot of time together. It's just part of it. You have to grow with one another. If you really love one another, then you'll enjoy spending time with each other.

2. No one is loyal these days!

Even though loyalty is hard to find these days, there are still a few loyal girls left in the world. You just have to find them. The ones who don't go behind your back or leave you with nothing but questions are in high supply. These are not the ones you want to concern yourself with. I promise that if you do find a loyal one, she will always be there and take care of you. Trust me, I know. They're just waiting to be found.

3. They will take all of your money!

If you get with the right girl, you will want to spend money on her. That's how it goes. She won't "take" it from you. You will want to spoil the right girl. She will enjoy the things you buy for her, but she will value the things you can't buy with money more.

4. My friends will make fun of me!

If your friends make fun of you for getting someone that makes you happy, they are not really your friends. They're just a little upset that they can't have what you have. It will be okay, because your girlfriend can also be your best friend.

5. It's going to be easy!

It is not easy. It is a challenge in itself. There will be obstacles, but I can tell you this: it will be WORTH IT. Love each other and embrace the challenge.

6. You won't fight!

You will fight. You will fight. You will fight. It is part of being in a relationship. It allows you to grow with your significant other and learn so that you may be happy. There will be arguments. Just prepare yourself. There is beauty in this if you allow it.

7. Girlfriends are a waste of time!

The right girl is never a waste of time. She will love you like no one else. She will be there when no one else is. She will open new doors for you. You just have to let her and don't ever think she is a waste of time.

8. A girlfriend will make my life easier!

A girlfriend will not necessarily make your life easier. At the end of the day, it is still your life. However, she can make it better and bring light into it. She can help you get through adversity. That's one of her jobs. Well, she will look at it that way.

9. I won't be able to hang out with my friends anymore!

The right girlfriend will value your friendships and allow you to keep them. She will want you to hang out with your friends and you will want her to hang out with her friends sometimes. She will also make sure you are hanging around the right people, just as you will do the same for her.

10. A girlfriend will bring me down!

A girlfriend will not bring you down! Only you can do that. If you have a girlfriend, it becomes one of the greatest opportunities you could ever have. You just have to be willing to take that chance.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
