10 Things College Makes You Appreciate

Don't hate, just appreciate!

Before college, there may have been some things we did not appreciate as much as we should have. Things like getting away from your annoying brother or sister. Although I'm kidding (maybe), college can help remind us to be thankful of simple everyday things we might have overlooked.

1. Personal Space

This should be a given. No matter how outgoing you are, there is always a time when you need your own space. It might seem like even when you think you have found a place to be alone, someone else is always there. This might be in the library, your favorite classroom, your bed or even in the shower, one of my personal favorites. Hey, no one should bother you while in the shower, unless it is an emergency, or your best friend, of course.

2. Home Cooked Meals

No matter what the cafe has, or how good it is, it can never replace that same taste and smell of your favorite home cooked meal. Although they do make some bomb desserts.

3. Free Laundry

Let's be real, laundry was never free to begin with, but watching your quarters fall to certain death doesn't quite help.

4. Naps

The real golden hour of the day, when you get to lie down and not think about anything for a while. We used to hate them when we were younger, but we love them now! It is also important to correlate your naps with your normal sleeping schedule (if you have one) so you don't get off schedule!

5. Technology

Maybe it is just me, but laptops are everywhere in college and it is almost a necessity. So, not having a laptop means having to walk to the library every time you have to do a report or just for funsies. This can be a struggle, especially if you happen to be a minimalist that would do anything to not go into the outside world.

6. Down Time

How am I seven weeks behind if I have only been in college for three?! Whenever this feeling comes across it is almost a godsend when you finally get time to yourself. Figuring out how you are going to spend that time, however, is the harder part. What about that show you've been neglecting on Netflix? Maybe catch up on the latest gossip with your girls or read a book, it's up to you.

7. Individuality

College is the time that you start branching out, growing, trying new things and get those exciting stories that you can torture your future children with! In other words, try that club you think would be interesting, and try something you think you would not be interested in at all. You might end up liking it, and it may become your favorite activity to do.

8. High School

This one may be a bit of stretch, but hear me out. Compared to college, high school years were the simpler times. When you could pass a class without maybe losing a whole night's sleep, or trying to keep your face clear even though the stress is next level.

9. Money

It seems like now every time you spend a dollar, a piece of you goes with it because money is so valuable when you reach college. All those books and supplies, probably hold a part of your soul now. So spending that precious dollar that you have been holding on to for a while is heartbreaking. Almost like watching that Sarah McLachlan ASPCA commercial.

10. That One Friend

Your first days of college you usually feel prepared and ready, but as the days go on you realize you don't have the right items you need anymore. Such as, a plastic fork to eat your ramen noodles with. No worries! That one friend who always has what you need has got your back, and will more than willingly give it to you.

So you should appreciate even the littlest of things, because usually they do mean the most. Also thank that one friend, and whoever makes your home cooked meals, because they are an important part of your survival!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
