Look, lament on how great Netflix is all you want, but we can all admit that it has a pretty terrible movie selection. If you're not looking for an obscure indie flick or the third rendition of some sub-par kid's movie then you're pretty much outta luck. Luckily, they have a few hidden gems in almost every genre that save the day. Obviously a genre of up-most importance; chick flicks. Whether you're in the mood to cry your eyes out because your life isn't directed by John Hughes, or get some good old fashioned Elle Woods inspiration, this list is for you.
Take the annoyance out of hunting for a movie that doesn't suck, help is on the way.
1. "Clueless" (1995)
This movie is iconic in every way possible. The sass that radiates off Cher Horowitz is nothing short of incredibly inspiring. From the scrunchies, to the glossy pouts, to the ingenious one-liners, "Clueless" is a movie that's perfect for every occasion. It's quite possibly one of the most glamorous coming of age movies that has ever been created. If you haven't already seen this masterpiece, you're majorly missing out. Although this most definitely comes off as a chick flick, there's no reason why guys can't appreciate this cinematic masterpiece too.
2. "Legally Blonde" (2001)
Elle Woods delivers a feminist message in the most feminine way possible. A phrase like "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" has never been played out in a more polished way. A man tells Elle that she's not smart enough for him to marry; she's too "Marilyn" and not enough "Jackie". So naturally, Elle gets into Harvard and graduates top of her class just to prove him wrong. If you're in a "screw men, I'm getting a law degree" kind of mood, channel it through this classic chick flick.
3. "Grease" (1978)
The
combination of cigarette smoke, big hair, cheesy musical numbers, and
leather jackets make this movie perfect for a girl's night. Something
about the poodle skirts and milkshake dates make one nostalgic for a
past that they never lived through. I want someone to take me
to a drive-in movie, gosh darn it. I could do without the weird test of
masculinity that comes in the form of a dangerous and certainly illegal
car race at the end of the movie, but whatever. The greasers have to
defend their honor somehow. "Grease" never disappoints- and come on,
young John Travolta... #swoon.
4. "Love and Honor" (2013)
Honestly, I'm not really sure what the plot of this movie was, I just know that it stars the youngest Hemsworth brother and that's pretty much all you need to know.
Kidding. "Love and Honor" is an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. A soldier in Vietnam flies home with his obnoxious comrad to win his girl back. But plot twist; she's turned completely hippie dippy and wants nothing to do with him. Kind of. It's hard to explain. You just have to watch it to understand. People die, there are multiple fights, people fall in and out of love, and my heart was ripped to shreds by the time it was over. Obviously this one is worthy of your next face mask and popcorn night.
5. "Mean Girls" (2004)
I don't think that too much needs to be said about this movie. Chances are, if you were interested in chick flicks enough to click on this article, you already know all about this one. If you don't, you probably feel like you're stuck on the outside of the most popular inside joke ever. Let's get you up to speed in case you're not hip to this cult classic; homeschooled jungle freak moves to the U.S. and is really popular, but then she's not. That's pretty much it. This movie was mostly included in the list to enlighten those that didn't know it was on Netflix.
6. "The Breakfast Club" (1985)
This coming-of-age cult classic doubles as a chick flick because it contains lots of drama and budding romance, which is pretty much what it's all about. Follow the story of five high school kids from all walks of life, joined together with one thing in common; detention. The best part about this movie is the fact that one of it's most popular scenes was actually mostly improvised by the actors.
7. "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999)
Oh, Heath Ledger. "10 Things I Hate About You" captures the late handsome star's finest romantic moments as Patrick Verona. Picture this: popular younger sister Bianca is not allowed to date until older, brooding sister Kat finds a suitor of her own. Younger sister's beau desperately tries to set up older sister with someone who matches her in mystery and noir sense of humor (Patrick), and pandemonium ensues. There's a lot of high school drama, a lot of yelling, and a poem that will tear your heart to shreds.
8. "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012)
Wes Anderson's genius never fails, and "Moonrise Kingdom" is no exception. Follow the story of two twelve-year-olds who have fallen madly in love and plan to run away together to escape their lackluster lives at home. Young love flows sweetly through this film, characterized by vintage Lilly Pulitzer outfits and fishhook earrings. If you're looking for an oddball movie, but still want the romance-y chick flick factor, this might be a good pick for your next movie night.
9. "Charlie St. Cloud" (2010)
What's a chick flick list without at least one Nicholas Sparks movie...? Since most of Sparks' best movies have already come and gone on Netflix, we're left with very few to choose from. Luckily, "Charlie St. Cloud" delivers the whole package. Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) is all grown up and trying to navigate through life as a strangely young grounds keeper at a cemetery. Basically, he talks to dead people. Then he falls in love. Then the biggest plot twist ever smacks you right in the face. Just get ready to cry, that's all I can say about this one.
10. "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987)
A much younger Patrick Dempsey comes to us in this movie as an awkward kid with really big hair, who bribes the prettiest girl at his school to pretend to be his boyfriend in exchange for money so she can replace her mom's suede suit that she ruined at a party. It sounds kind of messed up, but it's cute, I swear. This movie is all about staying true to yourself and not judging a book by its cover and blah, blah, blah, you get the point.
As much as we love to hate on Netflix, sometimes you have to admit that it does have a few good movies. Now that I've outlined some of the best ones for your next chick flick marathon, you won't have to go hunting for something that's worth spending time with alongside your friends Ben & Jerry.
