Beginning college is a major transition from the monotonous routine that is high school. College is filled with life changing decisions and unknown tomorrows. Without an effective support system, escaping college complete with your sanity would be futile. Luckily, God has given us some insight when we need help in life. Here are 10 verses that are a go-to for me when faced with the struggles that being a college student brings.
1. Psalm 91:4.
He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.
Going to college means growing up, which inevitably means moving out. It is difficult transitioning from being under your parents protection to having to provide everything by yourself. It is assuring to know that God will always keep you under His protection.
2. 2 Corinthians 12:9.
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for poweris perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.
Oftentimes, I feel incapable during college. There are classes and fields that I didn't even know existed. For example, I feel under qualified to be in a math class with accounting majors, when I'm an English major. Trust me, my brain is just not wired to work with numbers. However, this verse reminds me that God can use all of my biggest weaknesses to show how great His power is.
3. Philippians 4:12.
I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need.
College is definitely a time for emotional and financial instability. It's no secret that working part time as a waitress with student loans isn't the most profitable option. However, most students have to work minimum wage jobs while earning their degree. That being said, college students are (sometimes, for the first time) put into situations where money is tight. This verse gives me peace when I see my bank account plummeting lower and lower.
4. Colossians 2:8.
Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.
College is full of viewpoints and opinions that are completely new. I've known people to stray from their beliefs after getting an education. Being education should not mean abandoning your beliefs. I always remember to stay grounded in God's word after reading this verse.
5. Romans 8:28.
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
The future is a scary and exciting place when you're a college student. The future is so uncertain. Our decisions carry such a heavy weight. The instability can be daunting, but God's word reminds us here that everything will work out.
6. Matthew 6:23.
Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
My journey as a college student has been filled with stress and worry. Whether it's anxiety over a test or sorority recruitment, there has always been instances where I stress over small things. This verse has given me a lot of peace and rationality when my emotions run rampant.
7. Psalm 142:3.
Although my spirit is weak within me, You know my way.
A lot of times, I question where my life is going. I make decisions without thinking about the consequences. I don't study until the night before a huge test and pull an all-nighter. I just don't always think things through. However, this verse reminds me that the Lord is always there to help me along the way, even when I don't know myself what I'm doing with my life.
8. Romans 12:1.
Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.
There has been times when I (and most college students) have questioned their majors and future careers. This verse reminds us that our careers should, above all, be glorifying to God.
9. Romans 8:28.
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
Whenever I feel anxious about the future, this verse reminds me that all things will work out. It is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel in hard times. When I am faced with difficult circumstances, I usually come out wiser for it. All things happen for a reason, and this verse is a great reminder.
10. Proverbs 31:25.
Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come.
Proverbs 31 is a great reminder of the mold that all women should strive for. I love this verse because it reminds me of the things that matter to God. It doesn't say, "Frye boots and Michael Kors handbags are her clothing." Strength and honor are what women should care about, and it is what we should hope that our peers see in us.
