Saturday Night Live has successfully generated characters and sketches for over 40 years, so it’s hard to look at a collection of thousands of brilliant moments and narrow it down to just a few. But I did. Here are ten of my favorite SNL creations. Did your favorite make the cut?
10. Stefon
The overly dramatic social authority who has all the scoop on the hottest nightclubs in New York. And we never know what will follow the words, “This place has everything…” but usually it’s something awkwardly uncomfortable.
9. Brian Fellow
The zoologist and nature expert with no real credentials. But that doesn’t stop him from hosting an Animal Planet show. That’s crazy!
8. Marty and Bobbi Culp
The awkward, married middle school music teachers who honor MLK, Jr. at the middle school dance, and then sing (lounge style)…play that funky music, white boy. They mean well; they really do.
7. Gene Frenkle
The overzealous member of Blue Oyster Cult. His enthusiasm might frustrate his band mates, but he delivers exactly what’s needed…more cowbell.
6. Diondre Cole
If his music intro didn’t take up half of the show, this BET host might could get around to finally interviewing Linsdey Buckingham. What up with that?
5. Wayne and Garth
These teenage public access television hosts broadcast live from Wayne’s basement on Friday nights. They’re so beloved that they went on to make two hit movies. Party on!
4. Debbie Downer
If you invite her to a gathering, be prepared for what she’ll bring…bad news. Wah-waahhhh.
3. The Barry Gibb Talk Show
When Barry shifts to his falsetto voice, you know he’s about to lose his temper with one of his guests. But he’s allowed; he’s “Barry effin’ Gibb!”
2. The Spartan Cheerleaders
They aren’t even official cheerleaders, but they bring enthusiasm and support to ping pong and chess tournaments. Who’s that Spartan in my teepee? It’s me...it’s me!
1. Sue
She loves a surprise, but can’t keep a secret. Not without her fingers clenching or her hips locking. She can’t help it …she just gets so frickin’ excited!
