10 Best Horror Movies Based On True Events

Horror movies alone are scary, but they're terrifying when they're based on true events.

My personal favorite movie genre is definitely horror. I love getting scared out of my mind and anxiously waiting for something crazy to happen. While most horror movies aren't real, there are plenty of famous movies based on true events. Some are even 100 percent accurate when it comes to being historically correct. That's when horror movies get even scarier, and this is where we learn about the best horror movies that were based on true events. These are in no particular order, but I will try to save the best for last.

The Conjuring (2013)

I don't get scared that easily. I don't take scary movies that seriously and I don't expect the same things to happen to me when I go home late at night after seeing a scary movie. However, after seeing "The Conjuring" and learning that my mom would not be home that night because of work, I immediately refused to go home to a pitch-black house at midnight, and then stay there alone for the night. I was 17 years old. What makes "The Conjuring" even worse is that Ed and Lorraine Warren are real paranormal investigators, and they actually had to deal with a case like this. You can even drive by where the house was in Rhode Island.

Annabelle (2014)

Remember the scene at the beginning of "The Conjuring" where they describe a doll that terrorized people? Well, this movie continues the story of that doll, named Annabelle. I never saw this movie because I've had a thing against scary doll movies ever since I saw "Child's Play" as a kid, but what's shocking is that Annabelle is a real doll. She existed. And actually terrorized people. Even some people who have taunted the doll at the museum where she's kept have experienced fatal accidents and near death. Keep it away from me, please.

Child's Play (1988)

This will be brief because it scarred me as a kid. This movie was based on a nurse who put a voodoo curse on an author named Robert Eugene Otto, which transformed one of his dolls into a night-time menace. This movie is all kinds of creepy. What is up with haunted dolls being real..?

The Strangers (2008)

I always feel like the more realistic the movies, the scarier they are. When it comes to movies about serial killers, that really gets to me. This movie was based on serial killer Charles Manson and also events that happened to the director when he was a kid. When he was young, there was a group of people going around his neighborhood at night, knocking on people's doors, and if no one answered they would break in and rob them. The story was tweaked a little in "The Strangers," but the fact that something even close to this happened makes me nervous about living alone.

Curse of the Zodiac (2007)

This movie is about a serial killer in the San Francisco area between 1968 and 1969. It's been confirmed he killed at least seven people, but the killer claims he murdered 37. Yes, this is a true story, and the scariest part? He was never found or identified. Good luck, everyone.

The Rite (2011)

I loved this movie. I have a strange interest in the paranormal, especially the concept of demons and possessions. Most exorcism movies are weirdly set up and take it to the extreme. "The Rit"e attempts to present exorcisms and demonic possessions for how they actually are. Father Gary Thomas is one of the most famous exorcists in America, and this movie is based on his life. Whether or not you believe in demons, this movie is worth the watch.

The Girl Next Door (2007)

This movie is based loosely on what happened to a girl in Indiana. A girl by the name of Sylvia Likens was tortured in the home of Gertrude Baniszewski in 1965. and was eventually killed by her. This movie was inspired by those events, and it scares me because there are actually psychotic people out there like this.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

No, the actual story isn't true, but the premise is. The idea of this movie came from a group of Laotian refugees who refused to sleep because of nightmares. When they finally fell asleep after ten days, the families woke up to them screaming, and they were found dead due to no known cause.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Sadly, I have never seen this movie, but I really need to. This is a famous horror movie, and it's based on the famous serial killer Ed Gein. When he was arrested, he had nine masks made of human skin in his possession. Yeah, I'm all set.

The Fourth Kind (2009)

This movie is extremely creepy, due to the fact that it uses actual video accompanied with the re-enactment. This movie is based on case studies done on people who claim to be victims of alien abduction. While there is a lot of evidence that support the case studies, they have not specified what cases. Additionally, Dr. Abigail Tyler has never been found, nor do people believe she ever existed. What makes the case stronger for this being a real occurrence is the fact there is video evidence of patients experiencing alien abductions while under hypnosis, and also the fact that Nome, Alaska has had the most visits from the FBI in recent years. It's up to you to decide.

I hope you all enjoyed this, and please go watch these movies. They're worth the watch.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
