10 Benefits Of Practicing Yoga

I remember my first time doing yoga -- in the middle of my living room on a mat, flailing to imitate the moves on Jillian Michael’s "Yoga Meltdown." Little did I know that this was a super-intense form of the art, and I didn’t have to strain, but could delight in the movements. I have since been faithfully practicing yoga of all sorts with help from YouTube, DVDs, and books. I really do love it, and I have discovered a passion for it that I plan to keep for the rest of my life. In order to understand what’s so great about yoga, I’ve compiled a list of reasons why I do it.

1. It helps build flexibility (you’ll be a gymnast in no time).

2. You’re moving which means it’s good for your body in general.

3. Yoga helps relieve all of the stress you carry throughout your day.

4. It can be practiced literally anywhere and everywhere. Yoga Girl has been known to post photos of herself doing handstands and other poses on city streets and beaches. Cool!

5. You gain friends who share the same desires as you.

6. You find a lifelong passion.

7. You become tempted to adopt a healthier lifestyle (drinking more water, meditating and eating more fruits and veggies). Your pediatrician would be proud!

8. You sleep so much better!

9. You establish a routine in your otherwise chaotic world, and thus feel more in control of your life.

10. You get stronger -- both physically and mentally. Think about it: you’re pretty much benching your weight every time you hold a pose, and you become more in control of yourself and your mind.

Time to go do some pigeons, cranes, downward dogs and ice cream cones...

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
