I have always been fascinated by all the different languages, especially Spanish. I have spent countless hours memorizing definitions and translating text, however, not all words exactly translate. If you plug one of the following words into google translate, it will give you a simple definition that does not encompass everything the word actually means. Even certain words require a sentence or two to fully explain the what the word means. Here are some of my favorite idiomatic expressions and words.
1. Duende
This is arguably one of the most difficult words to translate into English. It is commonly used as a poetic way to express how one feels about nature. It can be described as the feeling of awe, beauty, and inspiration that one feels when experiencing nature.
2. Aturdir
You have three exams, a paper due, a three-hour practice, and a group project due in three days. You are most likely experiencing aturdir! This is a verb used when something overwhelms you to the point where you cannot even think straight.
3. Resol
We have all played the game of trying to shine a light right into someone's eyes by using a watch or some other reflective surface. Resol is the reflection of the sun off of a surface or the glare of the sun.
4. Chapuza
Sometimes procrastination gets the best of us or that project was the least of your worries... until it's the night before it is due. It is unlikely that one can put together their best work so it is most likely a poorly constructed project. Chapuza describes something where it is put together poorly and is messy.
5. Ojalá
This is a simple word that is commonly translated as "hopefully," but it directly means "God willing." It is used most often with hypothetical situations that one hopes to achieve.
6. Te Quiero
This is a way to tell someone that you care about them. Romantically, it means more than "I like you" but less than "I love you." Non-romantically, it may be used as "I love you."
7. Inefable
This is used to describe something that is so beautiful that is cannot be expressed in words. It is commonly used in describing nature or in a romantic context.
8. Efimero
This is used to describe something that lasts for only a short time. It is commonly translated as "short-lived."
9. Meliflou
When you hear the soft and calming flow of a river or the gentle rustle of leaves, this word may come in handy. It is used to describe a soft, sweet, or delicate sound.
10. Encantadora
This is commonly used in a romantic context to describe a lovely, charming, and enchanting woman.
So next time you cannot seem to find the right english word, just casually drop the Spanish word!
