Fall is hands-down my favorite season. From the cool weather to the colorful leaves to everything pumpkin spice, I absolutely love fall. In Maryland, the fall weather is wonderful. So are all of the fun seasonal activities. Here are just a few of the exciting events to participate in if you live in Maryland*:
1. Cornfusion in Manchester
This fall event has activities that are enjoyable for people of all ages. With pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, and an epic corn maze, what's not to love? The standard price is $10 and includes all activities that are available.
2. Baugher's Orchard and Farm
Visit on weekends from 10am-5pm to pick your own pumpkins and apples. The hayride only costs $2 per person and you pay for whatever you pick. This a great opportunity to find fresh apples and pick the perfect pumpkins for Halloween. You can also browse the market or sit down for lunch at Baugher's restaurant. Their apple cider and apple cider donuts are to die for.
3. Maryland Renaissance Festival
Take a trip back in time to 16th-century England. Enjoy plays, music, art, jousting, archery, and everything on a stick. There's really nothing better than Shakespeare and chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick. Add to the excitement by dressing up in Renaissance garb and adopting a British accent for the day.
4. Hiking
Hiking is one of those activities that can really be done anywhere. However, Maryland weather is ideal for hiking and there are many beautiful locations to enjoy. Recently, I have hiked to Patapsco Valley State Park and Oregon Ridge Park. The possibilities are endless; it just takes some quick research to select your preferred location.
5. Haunted Houses and Hayrides
If you're a thrill seeker and love a good scare, these activities are definitely for you. Some different attractions that you can find in Maryland include: Bedlam in the Boro, Legends of the Fog, Field of Screams, and Markoff's Haunted Forest. While I personally have never been to one of these attractions, and don't plan to, I'm sure they are just as terrifying as they claim to be for anyone who doesn't mind soiling themselves of experiencing nightmares afterwards.
6. Ghost Tours
If people dressed up in spooky costumes wasn't enough, now you can experience the real thing. The locations vary from abandoned buildings to cemeteries to Civil War sites. Various ghost tours and similar haunted locations can be found in Annapolis, Frederick, Ellicott City, Mount Vernon, Fells Point, and the Eastern Shore. Apparently Maryland is an incredibly haunted state... Find out for yourself on one of these tours.
7. Boo at the Zoo
Who said fall activities have to be scary? Enjoy a Halloween-themed day at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC. This event is centered more towards families with younger children, ages 4-12. Experience a variety of live entertainment, decorated trails, animal houses, and Zoo education. Adults can also attend an event called Night of the Living Zoo, an adult-only Halloween party at the same location on another date.
8. OC-tober Fest
Beaches aren't just for summer. Head down to Ocean City for a weekend of fall fun for the whole family. Events include a beach maze, pet parade, pumpkin race, and fright lights. Enjoy the beach one last time before winter weather sets in.
9. Amusement Parks
If you would rather get your adrenaline rush from a roller coaster than a guy in a clown mask, check out Hershey Park in the Dark (yes I know it is not in Maryland, but it is close enough). Admission includes trick-or-treating (for children under 12), rides in the dark on three popular coasters, and a nighttime tour of ZooAmerica. While you're there, stock up on candy for Halloween. It's sure to be sweet (pun intended)!
10. Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraisers
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means many reputable organizations are hosting events to raise money for research and treatment. Give back to your community by participating in a 5K Walk/Run, happening in various locations throughout Maryland.
*Note: some of these activities may be over for the season, but that doesn't mean you can't put them on the list for next year. Happy Fall, Y'all!
