There is so much going on in the world right now, and it feels like there is only so much we can do. Our world is fighting against sickness, injustice, hurt, and division. The list is endless.
It is all too easy to get entangled in a net of negativity, leaving our minds and bodies exhausted and unmotivated. When I feel down or drained, I try to list my gratitudes and engage in little activities that help foster a little happiness and reset my mind.
Here is my personal list of ten simple, fun activities for boosting mood and positivity:
1. Watch Animals
This may seem a little funny, but watching animals makes me smile. Watch the webcams on zoo and aquarium websites. Who doesn't love dolphins and pandas? If you have pets at home, set a few minutes to be in the moment with them. I love watching my dog follow the bees around in my backyard and the birds at my bird feeder.
2. Laugh
Laughing increases endorphins the brain and decreases anxiety, making you feel good. What makes you laugh? Maybe talk with a funny friend, tell a joke, or watch a funny YouTube video or sitcom. Film a silly challenge or dance with someone and let the laughter begin.
3. Go Green
Green is a symbol of happiness, creating feelings of happiness and renewal. Go outside, hike, and gaze at the trees. Wear something green!
4. Be a Kid
Think about childhood memories, activities, and items that make you happy. Remember all the scents, foods, and feelings. Maybe even engage in a childhood activity. A few weeks ago, I went on a picnic and brought some of my favorite childhood foods. Sweet nostalgia…
5. Dress Up
My quarantine, at-home outfits have consisted of yoga pants and t shirts, which is great, but it doesn't always make me feel the best. Dress up one day for yourself! We love some confidence.
6. Get Some Sun
Sunshine boosts vitamin D and all kinds of good, warm feelings. Sit outside or near a window for a bit.
7. Practice Yoga
Yoga is one of my passions. The reason that I've done it for so long is because it helps me feel better and reduces my anxiety. Yoga is not as hard as it seems. It is basically a series of slow movements, deep breathing, and meditation. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend following a YouTube video or letting someone guide you.
8. Look Through Old Photos
I love going through my parents' and grandparents' photo albums and scrapbooks. It is such a good way to gain inspiration, laugh a little, and learn more about your family.
9. Plant a Friend
Keeping a plant or a garden is a great way to feel motivated and a sense of accomplishment, even if it is just a small succulent or herb. Name your plant and let it keep you company.
10. Bake Something Good
Make yourself or your family a really good dessert. Enjoy the process and have fun! Some ideas are cookies, cupcakes, mug cakes, and cobbler.
