10 Things You Absolutely Need For Freshman Year

There are a few things I did not realize that I needed, until after my first week at college. Incoming college freshmen, here are the 10 things you absolutely need your freshman year.

1. Shower shoes.

Unless you like athlete's foot, I recommend that you wear these in the bathroom, 100% of the time. Don't be gross. Wear shower shoes.

2. Mattress pad.

College dorm beds without mattress pads feel terrible. Save yourself a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond, and purchase your mattress pad ahead of time.

3. Cheap towels.

There are going to be numerous occasions when you need cheap towels in your room...especially when you spill coffee on your desk! Accidents happen, and it is always nice to be prepared.

4. Comfy sweatshirt.

You think that you are going to dress up for every class, but you're wrong. Bring your most comfortable sweatshirt for the times when you don't feel like dressing up for your 8am class.

5. Throw blanket.

Your cute comforter is great, but bring a throw blanket as well. It will come in handy when trying to stay warm while studying, or trying to stay semi-cool when napping.

6. Water bottle.

Dehydration is a plague that is spreading the nation. Help end the madness! Stay hydrated.

7. Slip on shoes.

Besides your shower shoes, you need other shoes for the times when you have to walk down the hall, or walk to get your laundry. Slip on shoes are great!

8. Snacks.

Buy snacks that you really like, especially for the nights when you stay up late and are studying.

9. Speakers.

Speakers are great for the times when you are having random dance parties in your room, or are trying to get some hardcore cleaning done.

10. An open mind.

College is a time for you to develop as a person and form new ideas about the world! Bring an open mind to every conversation and interaction you have, and you will be surprised as to what you can learn from other people.

April Ludgate

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
