Happy Oregon Week, Dawg fans!
One of the reasons why I prefer college ball over the NFL is because of rivalry games like this. Sure, the Seahawks and 49ers had a few fun years in the Carroll-Harbaugh rivalry and teams like the Packers have bitter hatred with the Bears. However, especially for those who actually went to the schools, college rivalries are purely all about hatred. You're probably asking yourself, "What did the University of Oregon ever do?", and it's not about what they did, it's about howthey went about it. I
can't stand the Oregon Ducks, and I tell people the only reason I'd stop in Eugene is to take a leak.
I'd rather see the New England freakin' Patriots win a Super Bowl rather than the Ducks win a national championship (more jokes on that in a second). With the Dawgs and Ducks looking to square off for their 111th meeting in Eugene this Saturday, I compiled a few reasons why the University of Washington will always be better than the University of Oregon (athletically speaking).
Washington leads the all-time series against Oregon
GiphyLet's start with the numbers and facts because the numbers don't lie. Washington is 60-45-5 against the Ducks and even though Oregon won 12 straight games against UW between 2004-2015, they picked up 12 more wins in that span and are still 15 games worse than us in the series. Fun fact: Washington has not only won the last two meetings against Oregon, but they've outscored them 108-24. Again, the numbers don't lie.
UW actually has won a national championship
Giphy72,638 uniform combinations, 0 National Championships! Cougar and Duck fans team up against the Huskies on this one since UW technically shared a National Title in 1991 and they believe we don't have our own championship. Two things to note here: First, the record books say we have two national championships from 1960 and 1991 and second, even if the nay-sayers say that we shared our '91 championship with Miami...that's still half of a championship that Oregon doesn't have.
Nike, Nike, Nike
Let's talk about those revolting, disgusting, highlighter yellow and poop green uniforms. I'd rather talk about how student athletes only go to Oregon because of the infinite number of uniform combinations Nike presents them with. When UW announced they would be switching over from Nike to Adidas in 2020, I jumped for joy and realized that I won't have to wear anything Nike anymore. Nike is overrated, I said it! I don't really care if everybody else in the USA wears and/or supports Nike, because they're heavily associated with Oregon football and that makes Nike a no from me.
GiphyOregon fans ride the bandwagon
GiphyWhenever I find somebody in Washington wearing anything Oregon Duck related, I ask if they're lost and I always wonder if those individuals are smart enough to read a map. In my five years of sports retail experience, I witnessed a plethora of Duck fans coming into my store and talking trash, but most of those people reside in Washington. The Huskies went 0-12 in 2008 and Husky nation is still stronger than ever. I haven't heard anything relevant from the Duck faithful since their loss to Ohio State in the CFP National Championship game back in 2015 (did I mention they lost that game?).
UW is better suited for the future
GiphyOregon had a rough 2017 season with Willie Taggart as their head coach, and he left the following year for Florida State (I don't blame him). Although Oregon is back to relevance, they still have a ton of ground to make up with what Chris Petersen has done with UW. Although Browning, Gaskin, Gains, and a few other seniors will be leaving after this season, UW is loaded with QBs and solid 3-4 star recruits for the next few years, and years to come. This isn't to say that Oregon has young studs coming in too, but until Chris Petersen leaves UW or until Oregon decides to defeat UW again, the Ducks have a lot of catch-up to play.
We have always been able to pump our own gas
GiphyThis is one of the more underrated aspects of why Washington will always reign supreme over Oregon. While a new law passed earlier this year that allows Oregonians to pump their own gas, the fact that they weren't allowed to before makes me laugh. I wonder if UO has a class on how to work a gas pump?
I feel like I have to reassure people that I don't hate Oregon, nor do I wish the worst death upon anybody that likes and/or is associated with the University of Oregon. This is a bitter rivalry, and it's about trash-talking your worst enemy. It's elementary: We don't like them, and they don't like us!
