In the past couple weeks, Blizzard really did well in its revealing of cards gradually. Not only did it hype up the expansion, but it kept me alert and up to date with the most recently revealed card and kept me checking the Reddit as I thought of the possible shifts in meta.
As I saw the upcoming Hunter cards, I was in no way happy. As someone who loves the Hunter class, the revealing of cards like Crushing Walls (7 drop spell, "Destroy your opponents leftmost and rightmost minions") and To My Side (6 drop spell, Summon an Animal Companion, or 2 if your deck has no minions). With the class already in shambles, seeing these cards was not only disappointing, but hurtful that Blizzard would even print such garbage. With the full expansion out now, its seen what they were going for (No minion Hunter).
I have built the no minion Hunter deck and will be trying it out to see my thoughts on it for my article next week.
But at the moment, my initial thoughts are that it is going to be horrid. The deck actually saw some play at the Hearthstone invitation in Sydney but the deck got dumpstered. Beyond this, there isn't anything new for Hunter, except I am still intrigued by Cave Hydra (3 drop beast (2,4), "Also damages the minions next to whomever this attacks") and what it could do.
While disappointed in Hunter cards, I am very happy with the new Mage cards.
I am really interested in the Mage legendary weapon Aluneth (6 drop (0,3), "At the end of your turn, draw 3 cards") in how it really helps tempo mage with such massive card draw. But the possibility of overdrawing is huge and scares me from using the card. With Mage running no other weapons, there is no way to get rid of the card draw. I also like Deck of Wonders (5 drop spell, "Shuffle 5 scrolls into your deck. When drawn, cast a random spell"), even though the card is complete rng based trash, it seems fun. With cards that help with Big Mage and massive waveclear, I think Big Spell Mage is in a good spot and in general Tempo Mage is in a good spot with a new secret and waveclear. The question I was asking myself was how is Quest Mage?
I think with the cards like Deck of Scrolls, Lesser Ruby Spellstone (2 drop, "Add 1 random Mage spell to your hand (Play 2 elementals to upgrade)"), and Leyline Manipulator (4 drop Elemental (4, 5), Battercry: If you are holding any cards that didnt start in your deck, reduce their cost by (2).") Quest Mage has some nice ways to get spells and get them out. But at the same time, with a deck that is so tightly constructed, I am really unsure if these cards will find their way in. I would bet they wouldn't. In general, while there are some interesting Mage cards, nothing really meta changing for the class.
I am seeing what I can get in to my Yogg deck though.
