Monday morning at Youngstown State University is normally a solemn day for me and other students.
Reasons being that it's the beginning of the week and everyone is tired from studying all weekend or going out and having fun. However this Monday was particularly different.
An event happened that changed the face of YSU for a day.
As I parked my car and walked to the library to meet with my study group the atmosphere was calm. I walked past Kilkawley and closer to the library. I stopped and noticed our rock at campus core was painted different.
Low and behold horrific statements on the black, red and blue painted rock declared YSU's support for ISIS. This was on the only rock of YSU that has been set there since YSU was Youngstown College.
The blue side featured the peace sign drawn upside with the words “France Deserves Destruction” in bold. Other statements include “We are coming” and YSU supports Isis.
The longest message written on the rock continues to haunt me today. The red portion of the rock held statement of "the Christians shall burn" written in black for everyone to see before they went to class.
This paint job over the course of the night and following day surely stirred up the voices of students but also news organizations such as WKBN and WFMJ who arrived on the scene around 9:00a.m. To report on the happenings as well as the Vindicator who plastered the photos on their webpage.
From those two sources posting the same information and the FBI being called a precautionary measure.
This call is especially important for those who are freaked out about the messages coming from Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Some messages included students saying that other students and facility should be careful and remain calm.
The most important message was Jim Tressel coming to campus core.
@LucciJoseph said in a tweet “there's no other man more loyal to an area than Jim Tressel”
A couple hours after the incident students along the president and Tim Ryan gathered together to give the rock an American look with the flag and messages of God Bless America and Land of the Free.
Around 5:30p.m., two civilian soldiers stood guard with an American flag by the new rock.
Investigations were under way in order to find the man who painted the rock.
The FBI will be looking over the video footage to scope out over the next couple days.
Word came out later that day that Youngstown police had found the suspect but weren't releasing the name as of yet.
Tressel and other professors are urging students to call security services to be escorted back to the parking lots after classes end at night if they feel their life is at risk.
The question that may arise after this incident Is if campus is safe anymore. If you check out president Tressel’s message posted on social media it may give students the reassurance they need.
What we need to do as students is to gather together and unite against what happened, and not let this ruin our break and time with our family on Thanksgiving.
