Fat Burns In The Flame Of Carbohydrates

I'm in this awesome nutrition class at UW-Whitewater with Ann Garvin. I highly recommend her as a professor; I also took stress management with her last year. So I'm going to give you a brief about what we discussed in class this week.

We started out with a basic pie chart shown below. However, what the chart does not explain is that the carbohydrates should be COMPLEX. That means that white bread and pretzels don't count.

The chart below shows the difference in good carbs and bad carbs. This is very important to understand if you are trying to eat healthy or lose weight.

In today's society you will gain weight if you do not actively try to maintain or lose weight. Now the catchy title of this article comes from Professor Garvin. It means that we need carbohydrates in order to burn fat. If we don't have carbohydrates then the fat doesn't go away. (But we don't want it!) So this doesn't happen we need to continuously replace those carbohydrates that we burn off throughout the day.

The amount of protein in this graph surprised me. However, there are so many places we get protein from. In fact, we probably eat way too much protein. In all of these protein sources there is also fat. So, while we think we are being healthy getting our protein we really are getting a lot more fat than we need.

Lastly, there are also good and bad fats. The 30 percent of fat in our diet should be unsaturated. In other words, it should not come from an animal. Nuts and olive oils are excellent sources of unsaturated fats.

To help you eat well my professor also recommends this book that she owns. It offers hundreds of healthy recipes for every meal. Also, for every book someone buys they will give one away!

It is available on Amazon here.

Most people know they need to eat healthy but they find it to expensive. Hopefully this book helps with that problem!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
