The Bucket List (2007) stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson as two hospitalized men who are struggling with cancer. They decide they want to make the most of the time they have left, by living life to the fullest. This leads them to both write a bucket list, and subsequently, go to far lengths to make sure everything is crossed off.
While watching this movie last month, I started thinking - when was the last time any of us did something we really wanted to do? Something we've wanted to do all our lives, but were too scared to do or just never thought we could.
I am one of those people who writes a “to-do list” everyday. I make them the night before, so I know exactly what I need to accomplish the next day. Don’t get me wrong "to-do lists" are great! I always know what I have left to do in my day, and it keeps my mind organized, however, there's a major problem with them. In today's world, people get caught up in the “to-dos” and don’t actually get to what they would like to do. That’s why I think bucket lists are so important, so last month I wrote my own.
My bucket list only has 15 things on it, but along with it, I made a promise to myself. Every month, I will try and cross off at least one item or attempt something outside of my comfort zone. So consider writing your own list because, by doing so, you are one step closer to accomplishing one of the things you said you would – A Bucket List!
Although I have only been doing this for about a month, this month has made me realize that most of the time, you are the one holding yourself back from accomplishing the things you want to do. One of the best things about writing a list is that it doesn’t have to be elaborate or centered around big goals. It can as simple as taking a stroll through a local park, going floating down a river, and/or having dinner with the one love you outside on a warm, starry summer evening. Long-term goals can include traveling around the world, bungee jumping off a bridge in Australia, or having dinner at the Eiffel Tower. As long as it is something you want to do, and is going to make you happy - write it down!
Remember that you can always change or update your list – nothing is written in stone! The key is that you have personal goals to work towards, and you get the satisfaction of crossing them off once you complete them.
Being in my early twenties, I often find older people saying things like, “I wish I did this,” or, “I wish I went there”. Don’t be one of those people in ten years saying you wish you did something. Be someone who can say, "I did do that and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life."
Make a bucket list. Fill it with it your dreams, things that scare you, and things that are fun and exciting. Whatever you choose, write it down so you don’t forget it. It would be a shame to forget your dreams.
