June 26, 2015 now marks a significant day in American history. On this day, all couples, no matter their gender, are able to join together in marriage. On this day in America, love is love and love wins. On this day, America comes one step closer to achieving equality.
In a 5-4 ruling on Friday morning, the Supreme Court deemed that all 50 states must now allow same-sex marriage. This ruling makes the United States the 21st country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
"big step in our march toward equality." The President has continuously showed his support for marriage equality as a strong advocate of gay rights.
Finally, the struggle for gay rights advocates has ended in victory. This decision by the Supreme Court has settled one of the largest civil rights causes of this era.
Although there will be many citizens that are not in support of having marriage equality in all 50 states, and there will most definitely be backlash against the ruling, there are many more Americans that are in support of marriage equality.
In fact, according to a recent Washington Post Survey, 59% of Americans support Gay Marriage. This survey gives me hope that America will continue to reach the equality that its citizens desire.
What a time it is to be an American! At the turn of the century, today may not have seemed possible to most. But since 2004, when the first state in the United States legalized same-sex marriage, there has been more and more support for the cause with growing legalization of same-sex marriage throughout the U.S. Today, in 2015, marriage is equal for all nationwide.
No longer do supporters of same-sex marriage need to say that they support same-sex marriage or gay marriage. Now, thanks to all of the advocates and supporters of gay rights all types of marriage can now just be referred to as 'marriage'. Because that's exactly what same-sex marriage is- just marriage.
Today, we should all be proud to be an American and be proud to be alive on this day in history. I know I am.
