10 Things Future Hokies Should 'Start Jumping' For

1. The food

Virginia Tech has the No. 1 food in the nation (but for real check it out: https://colleges.niche.com/rankings/best-campus-fo...) and rightfully so, from chicken and waffles to lobster, you'll never run out of things to snap chat/Instagram/brag to your friends and family about.

2. Jumping in Lane Stadium to Enter Sandman for the first time

The amount of school spirit that Virginia Tech has is indescribable. Start practicing jumping on bleachers, the Hokie Pokey, and not sitting for about four hours because you'll be doing a lot of that for the next four years.

3. The Buildings

Not many people can say they go to college where the buildings are built with one-of-a-kind stone that can't be found anywhere else. Burruss is bae.

4. The Great Outdoors

Blacksburg is surrounded by tons of things to do that are either within walking distance or a short drive away. From the Duck Pond or the Huckleberry Trail to the Cascades, you'll literally never run out of things to do. And if you're not a Nature girl like me, you'll learn to adapt and love it.

5. Sporting the greatest color combo known to man, Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon

This can be summed up in one saying, “God is a Hokie, why else would leaves turn orange and maroon."

6. The Community

There is something special about the Virginia Tech community. It is something that will stay with you forever, and becomes a part of who you are, not just where you went to school.

7. Downtown Blacksburg

Downtown Blacksburg is possibly one of the cutest towns you'll ever encounter, also it extremely close to campus making it very convenient. Throughout the year there are ton of concerts, events, and farmers markets to attend and everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly to Virginia Tech students. Plus, where else can you find a Moe's AND a Chipotle right across to the road from each other battling for burrito supremacy?

8. Seeing the Hokie Bird around campus

Whether it's a hug, a “dap", a picture, or a wave, seeing this jolly bird will definitely brighten up anyone's day.

9. Practicing Ut Prosim

In high school, community service may have seemed like something boring you had to do for an hour on a Saturday to write on your applications for college but at Virginia Tech, it couldn't be more opposite. Hokies embody Ut Prosim by participating in widely successful activities such as the Big Event or Relay For Life and they are actually extremely fun and you'll look forward to doing them every year (plus, you get a lot of free T-shirts).

10. Being asked the question, "What's A Hokie?

And proudly replying with, “I am."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
