30 Things How I Met Your Mother Taught Me About Life

Legen- wait for it- dary!

This summer, I binge watched the entire series of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix (which I highly recommend if you haven’t already).  Although I'm extremely depressed about it being over, there are many notable lessons I took away from the iconic show.

  1. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers will never, ever, get old even if it is the only song you listen to on a cross country road trip.
  2. Be careful about who you allow in your group pictures.  You don’t want your memories tainted by the presence of a rando.
  3. Boogie boarding during a storm is probably not the smartest idea.
  4. Neither is cheating, ever.
  5. If you have a dark secret from your past, your best friends will inevitably find it.  The more you fight it, the more they enjoy mocking you.
  6. Nobody can pull off red cowboy boots, despite what a fashionable gay couple may say.
  7. If you practically live in a bar, put in the time to learn the bartenders and waitresses names.  They will appreciate the effort and you may get some free drinks out of it.
  8. However, never date an employee of your favorite establishment.  When it ends, your life will undoubtedly be horrible.
  9. Never underestimate the value of a good cab driver (shout out to Rob, the best cab driver at the nation).
  10. Even if you feel overwhelmed, fleeing the city, state, or even country will not make things better.  Remember where your loyalties lie.
  11. The “Bro Code” is a great piece of literature that should be applied to all relationships.
  12. Alcohol makes everything better.
  13. Even though you may think you do, you really do not want to live in Long Island.
  14. Canada may as well be a different planet.
  15. No matter how strong a front she puts up, every girl wants to be treated like a princess. That is not to say, however, she can’t kick your ass in laser tag.
  16. Being a good wingman requires full commitment.
  17. Your parents are people too.  Just like you have secrets from them, they have secrets from you too.  Respect that, sometimes it’s just better not to know.
  18. You should believe in destiny, but in moderation.  Sometimes you need to make your own destiny to get what you really want.
  19. The best relationships are when you are dating your best friend.  Everyone wants a Marshall to their Lily.
  20. Be smart about whom you trust when you’re drunk at a bar. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if you are talking to a Barney or a Ted.
  21. It’s never a bad idea to make every night legendary.
  22. Not all relationships are meant to work out.  If it does, great.  If it doesn’t, move on.  If the feelings aren’t there they never will be.  The more time you waste pursuing the impossible the less time you have with your future spouse.
  23. Who you used to be does not need to be who you always are, everyone changes.  Despite that, you should never compromise your values.
  24. “Eating a sandwich” can make any story better.
  25. Finding the perfect apartment is nearly impossible.  When you find it, hold on to it as long as you possibly can.
  26. Appreciate all the little traditions you have with your friends.  You won’t realize how much they mean to you until they end.
  27. Learn how your friends react to certain types of alcohol and use it to your advantage.
  28. Smoking cigarettes is never a good idea. Ever.
  29. A lot will happen between now and your 30s.  Things that seem like the end of the world now won’t matter in due time.  Don’t sweat the insignificant, the meaningless, or the ex.
  30. Your best friends will be there for you no matter who you date, where you live, how much you drink, what you wear or what you do.  Never stop loving them for that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
