I mean, who wouldn’t want one? As an owner and lover of a small dog, I can definitely vouch for the fact that what they lack in size, they make up for in spontaneous, joyful, and loving energy.
My family has owned a purebred Chihuahua for about four years and ever since we got her in 2010, we don’t know what we ever did without her. Here are 10 reasons why small dogs are worth it!
1. They
are good to go.
With
small dogs, you don’t have to make special plans to take them places or make
any extra space. Whether it's a road
trip or just a simple outing, having them ride shot gun, or even in the
driver’s seat, is easier than ever!
2. Lap
time is nap time. Not
only do they make great friends in the car, but when you’re at home you can bet
they’ll be cuddling up on your lap for a good snooze. In fact, I hardly get the opportunity to sit
down by myself anymore before Lilly (my Chihuahua) comes to join me and find her
niche.
3. They
love to share a slumber.
Which
means -- you guessed it -- you’ll always have a sleeping buddy! And even better…
4. They
don’t shed like big dogs. So,
sleeping with you isn’t a problem. It’s
actually the most adorable thing you’ll ever experience. Each morning you get to wake up to an eager
face that’s just as ready to greet the day as you are! And if it just so happens that you’re not,
they’ll gladly go for a few more hours of snuggle and sleep with you.
5. They
fit in our bags. What
kind do you have? A purse or backpack? A tote?
They are sure to fit in any of these while you stroll on an outing. Why not let your little friend hitch a ride
on your back and take it all in?
6. They
are approachable. People
will think your little dog is the greatest thing they’ve ever seen, and they won’t be afraid, or be able to resist, to pet them.
7. You
will be very popular. Yes,
your dog could potentially help you meet a lot of people. Even when it isn’t with you, it’s a great
topic of conversation.
8. Small
dogs love and respect their larger counterparts. Three
years ago, my larger dog, Chance, was hit by a car and, now, only has three legs
to his name. Every day, when my dad goes
to take them out, she helps and encourages him to go out the door by nudging
and walking with him. She even makes
sure we know when he wants to come back in.
9. Less
is more. When
you have a small dog, you do less and get more out of it. Baths are especially easy because you can do it in the tub, shower, or an old wash tub,
and it only takes about 10 minutes!
Further, small dogs eat less, which means a little bit of food goes a
long way!
10. They are big when you want them to be. We all know they are pip-squeaks, but it’s cute when your small dog tries to be
protective of you, and they will whenever they feel it is necessary. This also lets us know that they have big
hearts and are always sharing their love at the moments when we need it most.
Maybe the next
time you catch your parents in a moment of weakness, they’ll let you get one! Remember, they’re worth a try.
