You Should Go Greek If...

You Should Go Greek If...

Before formal recruitment, it is common to wonder if you belong in the Greek system at your school. After all, being in a sorority is a large time and money commitment, and involves dedication and passion. I believe everyone can find their place in the Greek community, but if you need some reassurance, see if you match any of my examples. You should go Greek if...

You want to meet new people.

I know this is obvious, but you cannot be told enough. When you join a sorority, you will be surrounded by a pledge class full of girls who are equally as eager to meet new people, as well as a sorority full of older girls who are already obsessed with you. There is something comforting about knowing that your sisters will always be there for you, and you will never run out of people to make plans with.

You have a passion for a specific sorority's philanthropy.

At Vanderbilt alone, our 10 Panhellenic sororities work hard to support domestic violence awareness, families with sick children, arthritis research, the Make a Wish Foundation for children with terminal illnesses, children's hospitals, support for abused and neglected children, Girl Scouts of America, underprivileged children in Tennessee, literacy, and breast cancer education and awareness. If you feel passionately about any of these causes, then your sorority will mean a lot to you, and you will impact your chapter greatly.

You have a passion for service in general.

As a sorority woman, serving goes beyond the specific philanthropy that each chapter supports. There are an abundant amount of service opportunities each semester that members of the chapter find for everyone to get involved in. Whether it is playing with puppies at the humane society or tutoring children at the local church, there is always something fun and meaningful to do.

You want to get more involved on campus.

As a freshman, especially at a large university, it is normal to have a hard time finding the right club to get involved in when you are already overwhelmed with making new friends, living away from home, and taking difficult classes. There are so many ways to participate in your sorority, like planning a benefit or competing in an intramural. Furthermore, each sorority woman is involved in other organizations that they would love to tell you all about.

You are looking for a home away from home.

As soon as you join a sorority, your sorority house is your new home. If you ever need a comfortable place to do homework, escape your noisy dorm, or talk/cry to a friend, the house is the place to go.

If any of these things apply to you, you should strongly consider going through recruitment. You could be making one of the best decisions of your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
