Three Steps to a Transformative Spring Break in San Diego

Stranded in Paradise?

“I go to school where you spring break.” You’ve surely let this phrase slip while gloating to your East Coast friends on Facetime. But what about spring breaking where you go to school? Is San Diego still as boastable when you’re stuck without a wild vacation or a plane ride home?

So, you’re stuck here. What now? Once the FOMO (fear of missing out) and the parental resentment subside, you’ll get excited. You’ll realize now might be the perfect time to work on your tan, or spend the week on your couch watching House of Cards. But you don’t have to waste the break on a week-long Netflix and chill date with yourself. There are countless events happening in San Diego all the time, and the week of spring break is no exception. Here is a list of adventures that will take you off the couch and into the world.

1. Get fresh!

I don’t care what anyone says: you cannot live off of instant ramen and Pastaroni for the rest of your life. Go out and get yourself some fresh local produce at one of San Diego’s many vibrant farmers markets.

My five favorites:

Leucadia/Encinitas Farmers' Market and Art Fair

Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pacific Beach Farmers' Market

Saturday, 8 a.m. to Noon and Tuesday, 2 to 7 p.m.

Del Mar Farmers' Market

Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Hillcrest Farmers' Market

Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

North Park Farmers' Market

Thursday, 3 to 7 p.m.

2. Get cultured!

Go to a concert, see some improv comedy, or even perform something of your own. The options are endless.

Happening this week:

National Comedy Theatre, March 18th

Open Mic @ Lestat's , March 21st

Ra Ra Riot @ The Irenic , March 22nd

Daughter @ Belly Up Tavern , March 24th

Freddie Gibbs @ The Observatory North Park , March 25th

3. Get outside!

San Diego has the most beautiful beaches around, but people often overlook all of the other natural beauty the city has to offer. Trade in your flip-flops for a pair of trainers and step out of your comfort zone with these outdoor adventures.

Potato Chip Rock

Mt. Woodson Trail, Ramona, CA

Sunset Cliffs Trails

Sunset Cliffs, San Diego, CA

Cowles Mountain

Mission Trails Regional Park, San Diego, CA

Maple Canyon

Park West, San Diego, CA

Presidio Park Trails

Old Town/Mission Hills, San Diego, CA

Enjoy your break!

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
