Every day 93,000 planes fly across the sky, taking people to destinations around the world and introducing them to changing environments and different cultures. Here are statements that some of you "global citizens" might relate to.
You know you're international when...
- You always take a little too long to answer the question "Where are you from?" All you want to respond is: "Well, do you want to know where I was born or where I spent my childhood or my teenage years or where I live now or where my family resides currently?" But, you decide to stick with a simple answer and hope they don't ask anything else about the country you just named.
- All your friends are a plane ride, not a car ride, away. These long distance relationships are hard and certainly very expensive.
- You download Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, GroupMe, KiK, WeChat, in other words, everything just to be able to stay in touch with others. But then again everyone knows the "Don't worry we'll Skype ALL the time" comment doesn't really hold true unless you really, really try.
- Saying goodbye has become a habit. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean it's any easier to say goodbye to your best friends knowing it'll probably be years before you have the chance to see them again.
- Long-term commitment is a difficult feat. Who can blame you? It's just emotionally easier and less complicated to avoid commitment since you never stay long enough in one place to keep anything going.
- You always have to consider the time difference when calling a family member or friends. Most of the time this means that you are up at random times in the middle of the night contacting the other side of the world.
- Hearing three languages going on at the same time in a room doesn't surprise you. Most of the time you just say a word in the language that comes to your mind the fastest. Also, you benefit from switching languages in public just so people around you can't understand what you're saying.
- Jet lag is a constant reminder of your dynamic lifestyle. It follows you everywhere severely throwing off your body time clock.
- You feel offended when the security lady asks if you have any liquids in your bag. "Honey, please, I'm not an amateur."
- You can repeat the flight attendant's spiel about how to fasten a seat belt, where the exits are, and how to inflate a life vest by heart.
- You know your way through several airports better than your way through the streets of your so-called home city. However, you do develop a great sense of direction.
- You make sure to book the right flight with the right airline to get those miles. Business class upgrade here I come!
- Packing is your specialty. You might as well be called a professional at this point because you can expertly make space for things when obviously there's no room left in that one suitcase.
- Your passport is holy and filled with stamps. You might even carry around two because your VISAs are in the old one.
- 'Independence' is your middle name. You don't need anyone looking after you or telling you what to do. You've learned about life yourself through all your experiences.
At the end of the day, you realize that even though there's so much out there to see and explore, the world is actually small and everyone is connected. My advice to you all is to keep traveling the world, meet new people, stay open to opportunities, and as Katy Perry would agree, never lose that international smile.
