Everyone plans on going to Oktoberfest, seeing the ball drop in Times Square and celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Ireland. With the new year coming along here are some fresh ideas to inspire the new you. They are listed in the order of their 2016 dates.

1. Sundance Film Festival — Park City, Utah


The largest independent film festival in the United States showcasing both American and International movies. My favorites are "500 Days of Summer", "American Psycho" and "Heathers". (January 21-31, 2016)

2. Carnevale — Venice, Italy


Celebrate Mardi Gras Venetian style with masks and gondolas. The festival was first held in 1162 and became famous during the Renaissance. The whole city dresses up in costumes, hides their faces and parties in the streets. (January 23-Feburary 9, 2016)

3. Sapporo Snow Festival — Japan


The festival displays over 400 statues made of snow spread throughout different locations. There are also concerts held on snow stages. (February 5-18, 2016)

4. Holi Festival of Colors — India


Celebrate the Hindu festival of colors starting with a Holika bonfire. The next morning participants chase and color each other with dry powder and colorful water. (March 24, 2016)

5. Glastonbury — Pilton, England


A music festival inspired by the hippie culture. Peace, love and Glastonbury. (June 22-26, 2016)

6. Boryeong Mud Festival — South Korea


Because who doesn't want to spend two weeks rolling around in the mud? (TBA)

7. Tomorrowland, Boom — Belgium


Tomorrowland is arguably the most notable international music festival. Playing only EDM, the event attracts over 300,000 people. (July 22-24, 2016)

8. Splendour in the Grass — Byron Bay, Australia


Another music festival. This one's a three-day event with a killer line up including everything from Indie rock to EDM. (July 24-26, 2016)

9. La Tomatina — Buñol, Spain


Literally a festival that consists of throwing tomatoes. (August 31, 2016)

10. Village Halloween Parade — NYC


According to USA Today, "Absolutely anything goes." (October 31, 2016)

11. Full Moon Party — Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand


An all-night beach party during every full moon.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
