Why We Need To Respect EVERY Artist

In light of recent events surround musicians, I believe that people need to understand one critical fact: EVERY musician needs to be respected. Yes, I understand we all have our opinions on which ones are the best and which ones are the worst, but the fact is, every musician deserves to be given respect, whether you like it or not.

Here's a list of the recent events I'm talking about.

1. Taylor Swift vs. Nicki Minaj

This two-day dispute started after the nominees for MTV's Video Music Awards were announced. Swift was nominated for nine awards, including Video of the Year. Minaj stated her frustration on Twitter because her video "Anaconda" was not nominated for Video of the Year. Yet, the video had broken Vevo records (namely most views within 24 hours) that had been set by Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball" video (which in fact was nominated for Video of the Year) in the past.

One of her tweets stated, "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year" to which Swift replied, "I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.." Minaj was stunned stating that she did not mean to directly target Swift with her tweet. Swift even stated that Minaj would be welcome on stage with her, if she were to win the award.

After a few more Tweets and even Katy Perry possibly adding fuel to the fire with, "Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman..." things cooled down. Swift later on apologized to Minaj the next day, "I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki."

2. All Time Low vs. Metro Station (Mainly, Trace Cyrus)

I could go on forever talking about this feud! All Time Low happens to be my favorite band, but for you, the reader, I will stick to the facts. On July 22, the Alternative Press Music Awards took place in Cleveland, Ohio. Alex Gaskath and Jack Barakat of All Time Low hosted the awards show and naturally made a few puns. One of them being aimed at Metro Station. Barakat and Gaskarth were set to introduce Metro Station, who were then set to announce the band PVRIS's preformance with Tyler Carter of Issues.

Gaskarth stated, "Our next presenters are a lot like Pixar." Barakat stated, "That's right, they're related to Disney and their work makes us cry." Gaskarth then went on to introduce Trace Cyrus and Masson Musso of Metro Station. Trace Cyrus walked up to the microphone and stated, "Before we say anything, I don't know why All Time Low always has to talk sh*t on Metro Station; we've been nothing but nice to those guys. It's so disrespectful when you go on tour with bands and they treat you disrespectful; it's ridiculous. But we're not here for that reason, I just had to get it off my chest."

Apparently, the conflict then continued backstage. Cyrus and Gaskarth argued for quite a while until photographers and band personnel stepped in to prevent any real damage. Gaskarth then went back on stage to say this, " Guys, guys ... I just had the most beautiful conversation with Trace Cyrus backstage ...Touched my heart ... Hey, I wanna remind everyone, we're having a good f****ng time tonight, okay? We check our egos at the door, this whole show is for you guys, the fans. I didn't think I had to say this, but it's all a joke, guys. It's all jokes, don't get upset, we're making fun of everyone, including ourselves."

Cyrus then proceeded to vent his anger through Twitter and Instagram, posting many photos and tweeting a six year old video from a live All Time Low concert where they proceed to poke fun of Metro Station's hit song Shake It. You can watch that here:

All seemed to have died down until the middle of Panic! At The Disco's set. Front man Brendon Urie stated this before preforming a cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," "This song is for Trace Cyrus. Here you go, f*cker." Later on after the show had ended the drummer of All Time Low, Rian Dawson, had this to say on Twitter, "As Alex [Gaskarth] said, this night is about the fans. And I’ll be damned if anyone distracts us of that. I love you all!"

3. Drake vs. Meek Mills

Meek Mills decided to go on Twitter as well this week! He called out Drake, more specifically stating that Drake does not write his own verses, and even more specifically, that he did not write his own verse on Meek’s recent hit single “R.I.C.O.” from "Dreams Worth More Than Money." Meek stated, "Stop comparing Drake to me too ... He don't write his own raps! That's why he ain't tweet my album because we found out!" and, "He ain't even write that verse on my album and if I woulda knew I woulda took it off my album..... I don't trick my fans! Lol" Not to mention he used Drake's own lyrics against him and even named one of Drake's songwriters, "Quentin miller."

Producer and long-time Drake collaborator Noah “40” Shebib soon jumped to Drake's defence stating, "I can't count the hours that myself and drake have spent writing producing and recording music. Let's just say... 5000 hours..." and even, "If your asking if he contributed to if you're reading this... Yes, he did. You can also see that by reading the credits." What most people don't know is that if someone writes a rap for a rapper and that rap is preformed and the record label or company sends that someone who wrote the rap a check, they are NOT a ghost writer. They are actually part of a publishing deal.

Much like any other performer, Drake surrounds himself with a group of people during the writing process. If he hears something he likes he will use it. If he hears something he doesn't like he will ignore it. What he does like he will shape it and form it to his own style and tastes. That's how songs, raps, books, movies, television shows, etc. are written. As much as we would all like to think that one person wrote this one specific thing all by themselves, that is almost impossible now. I'm not saying it is gone completely but it is quite rare to have something written by one person that has not had an influence from any outside source.

It also seems as if Meek Mills has apologized to Drake at one of his shows. Since then, no further beef has been stated.

So what does all of this have to do with my main point? EVERYTHING!!!! People, INCLUDING fellow artists, need to learn to respect EVERY artist and what they do. Yes, we can have opinions on who we like and who we dislike, and who we just cannot stand to listen to, but the bottom line is these artists work their BUTTS off to create music. I don't care if they have people writing songs for them, I don't care if you think they are over-hyped, I don't even care if you don't like them just because that's what everyone else thinks. You think it's so easy? Why don't you try to create songs, record about three albums worth of songs, narrow that down to one album, get the album edited and finalized, do photo shoots, do music videos, promote promote promote the hell out of the album, travel all over a state, a country and eventually the world, miss seeing your family and friends for months at a time, and all for what? Because you love to make music.

This is what they love to do, and the fact that they get paid to do it is also pretty cool. To create this entire something from nothing and then give it back to the fans to enjoy, that's why they do it. Yes, some artists completely forget about the fans through the fame process. But for those who don't, you can ask them personally, and they will tell you that they do all of it for us. What do we do in return? For the ones we love we go out and buy every album, we put them all on repeat, we follow them through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and whatever else they have, we buy all of their merchandise, and we go to the live shows and concerts. We show them just how much we truly love them.

For the ones we don't like, we bash them with criticism and hate. Don't get me wrong, sometimes criticism can be helpful to see where an artist went wrong, and they can fix it to become better. But a majority of the time we bash and hate for no reason other than, "Oh, I just don't like them." OK, get OVER IT! Move on and promote what you love, WHO you love! Because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much we hate something or someone. All that matters is which artists we love, and which artists we want to see over and over and over again. For those artists that keep pushing and keep doing all that you do for your fans, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Because what you do is amazing.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
