As a new college student, adjusting to college life can be a long, drawn-out process. Especially if you find yourself miles away from home, it can seem as if you've suddenly been thrown into the real world, forced to take on full responsibility. Adapting to dorm living, living with a roommate 24/7, and relying on yourself can be a intimidating change, but hopefully these few tricks and tips will help make the college life a little easier.
Take advantage of being a student. There's a whole list of benefits that accompany your student ID. Here's a few stores that will honor your student status:
Make packing clothes easier. Instead of packing each shirt or dress individually, try keeping them on the hanger and using a trash bag instead to easily carry a handful of clothes. This saves time not only in the packing process but also when it comes to unpacking. Now you won't have to hang up everything individually again.
Save space in your closet. A majority of college dorms don't necessarily prioritize room for the closet, and transitioning from your own larger closet to sharing one with a roommate can be quite a challenge. To save space, try using bottle cap openers to hang two hangers in less the space.
Quick hairstyles. On the mornings when you're rushing to get to that 8am, you can still skip the intense hair styling and manage to look somewhat put-together. Try this super quick trick of braiding your hair and straighten the braid for loose, boho waves.
Make one meal last multiple days. If you're not necessarily a fan of leftover pizza, think again! To reheat without making your pizza taste like soggy cardboard, try putting a small glass of water in the microwave too to keep this from happening.
Use straighteners as an iron. Instead of bringing one more bulky appliance to school, try this trick instead. When you're rushing to an interview or an internship, just run your straightener quickly over the wrinkled spots, and voilà, you're pants or shirt are perfectly crisp!
Study with a fun method. Try this method where you reward yourself with a treat of your choice after reading a certain amount. This will be sure to give you an incentive to get that assigned reading done.
Download an app called SelfControl to help with studying. This app was designed to block certain websites, such as social media, that can interfere when you are studying. When it comes time for exams, turn on this app and just see how much quicker and effective your studying becomes without the constant checking of Facebook.
Make sure you correctly understand how to "read" a solo cup. Those lines aren't just for decoration, they serve a purpose and make sure you know the meaning of each of those lines. This knowledge is sure to come in handy at some point during your college experience.
Make your dorm room smell fresh. Crowded dorms can have a tendency to smell musky, and most dorm policies restrict candles. To combat the stench, try tapping dryer sheets of your favorite scent to a fan. The fan will blow the scent throughout your room, and soon enough, your room will smell just as amazing as a load of fresh laundry.
