Having A Friend Named Vicky

Vicky:noun. A girl who has the charisma to light up an entire room, making even the coldest shoulders warm as musical words drip off her tongue. She is as beautiful as the brightest star, and she puts the northern lights to shame. Although she can be absolutely off her rocker, she is wickedly smart and talented in multitasking.

Who wouldn’t want some of that in their life?

I am fortunate enough to know a couple of girls named Vicky, but I am blessed to be able to call one my best friend. So, you may be asking: “What does being friends with a Vicky entail?”

Being friends with a Vicky means you will always have a support system whether you live together or states apart. She will sprinkle encouragement over everything you set your mind to doing You will constantly be entertained when she recaps an event you missed because her eyes light up as she travels through her memory. After spending a couple of hours with her, you will be unconsciously adding in a tiny laugh that you picked up from listening to her tell her stories.

Being friends with a Vicky will give you a shoulder to cry on, arms to be hugged with, and a mouth that will spill the most encouraging words on you when you feel down. She will be completely honest when it comes to serious matters. She will tell you everything you don’t want to hear, but she will say it in a way that lets you know she is on your side, even if you don’t take her advice. She will be there to pick up the pieces of your heart after she warned you to be careful about a guy, but she won’t say “I told you so”. She will only grab you into a hug while telling you about all the fun things that you are going to do to get your mind off of the miserable feeling you have in the deepest pit of your stomach.

You will have someone that is always up for going out, and you will always have a dance partner. If you have creepy guys slithering around, fear no more because Vicky will sweep you away to safety. Craving a trip to the zoo? You’ll get that too. Not only that, but she will also hike any trail, go on any adventure, or just stay in and watch Netflix with you. Whatever you want, she’s up for it even if she doesn’t get anything out of it except quality time with a great friend. You will get to play with the sweetest dogs that ever walked the face of the earth, and they are all the more better because Vicky named them something totally awesome.

A Vicky will be so confused why everyone is staring at you both in Walmart before having to be reminded that you have a prosthetic leg, and she will laugh and say “Oh yeah, I forgot about that” because she only sees you as you. Not as an amputee. If you can’t do an activity because you are not wearing the right leg, she will make you feel as if you are still included.

A Vicky will have at least one friend that would be an absolute mess without her, and every Vicky should know that we appreciate everything she does for us and how much we love her.

So, if you know a Vicky, make sure to really get to know her. It may be the best thing that will ever happen to you. And if you already have a best friend named Vicky, hold on tight, because the best is yet to come.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
