Crawling For The Kids…Through The Classic City

As a college student, and particularly as a member of the Greek community, I have realized that there are two commodities that can incentivize me to do just about anything (no, pizza is not one of them... although it is a close second). If you’ve ever heard the saying “do it for the t-shirt”, and in fact “did it for the t-shirt”, you understand how precious and valuable a Comfort Colors t-shirt with a frocket really is. Sure, your drawer is stuffed to the rim with them, but how can you possibly go to class without one on? So, you agree to be set up on the date night, you reluctantly fill out the Google-doc time and time again to have the latest social shirt, and you go to any event that might be selling them. Why? Because they are not merely a want, but a need.

It may be 22 degrees outside and raining, but nothing says “get out of bed and get dressed for downtown” like realizing your favorite bartender is working. Nothing will compel me to sprint across the crosswalk without the walk-signal in heels, like knowing that power-hour ends in 5 minutes and the clock is ticking. The promise of cheap drinks is enough to get just about anyone downtown.

The only thing that can really make either commodity better, is having them together. Whoever made T-shirt Tuesday a thing is a deserving soul, and has allowed organizations such as Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), the marketing/management/sales fraternity, to sponsor bar-crawls such as the Classic City Crawl. This year over $6000 has been raised, and we hope to continue increasing this number!

For those unfamiliar with how a bar-crawl works, you buy the Classic City Crawl T-shirt and essentially barhop through a nightlong power hour, as your shirt signifies to the bartender of the participating establishments that you are to receive discount drinks. Not to mention, you simultaneously support a worthy cause. This year, the philanthropic focus is on Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; as they will receive the proceeds from the establishment sponsorships.

Establishments participating include a variety of retail, restaurants, and bars, of downtown Athens such as Transmetropolitan, The World Famous, SandBar, Centro, Moonshine, Brixx, Cloud and Whiskey Bent just to name a few. Needless to say, you should not need much more convincing to participate. However, in the case that you might, here are some reasons:

T-shirts are only $15 (probably cheaper than the ones in your drawer). You’ve seen people on campus walking around sporting a map of downtown Athens on their backs, with all of your favorite spots pinpointed, and wondered where to get one…so here’s your chance to seize the opportunity! They can be purchased online at http://www.ugapse.com/thecrawl, or through any PSE member (including myself- my contact information is below) and MUST be worn to receive the discounts.

You might even leave downtown with more cash than you came with. Key word in that sentence is “might” because who really knows what you end up buying downtown, but thanks to the drawings/raffle events there’s a chance. Either way, you can consider yourself a winner anytime you get drinks for a dollar all night (and subsequently have more money to late night with *cough* Waffle House).

FTK. So you weren’t on a UGA Miracle committee, you’ve never fundraised for CHOA, and you missed out on Dance Marathon...but don’t fret- yet another opportunity to be “For The Kids” presents itself. This may be the easiest of all ways to support a cause, and in the event that internal satisfaction doesn’t do the trick, you’ll have a stomach full of well drinks as a reward.

Tuesdays. At this point in the semester, midterms have everyone eagerly awaiting spring parties, and looking for any and every excuse to escape their desks. Luckily, the Classic City Crawl is the perfect excuse to go out *on a Tuesday* because after all it is for a good cause. Looks like you just figured out your plans for March 31st.

Bank on Power Hour 9pm-2am. So this has already been stated, but can you really put too much emphasis on cheap drinks? The full list of participating establishments can be found at http://www.ugapse.com/, and the specials that will be offered at the respective establishments will be advertised as the event approaches.

Hope to see everyone downtown supporting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on March 31st and don't forget to wear your shirt to get the deals that are offered! Feel free to reach out to me, or any PSE member, if you’d like one!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
