The Five Types of Uber Drivers

This also applies to Lyft.

The Five Types of Uber Drivers

I think we can all agree that ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are a crucial service in college. Whether you're going to the airport, the mall, or just don't feel like walking across campus, these apps are the perfect way to get somewhere quickly and with minimal effort on your part. The only variable in this situation is the driver: who's going to be taking you on this ride can definitely impact how much fun you have. Here are some of the typical drivers you may encounter.

1. The hot one

This is the ultimate goal. When you press that “request" button and your phone is busy searching for a driver, this is what you're praying for. Once you see their picture, you know exactly how this is going to go. They're going to pull up in their sexy car and light up when they realize that you're the passenger they're looking for. Once inside the car, you light up his or her world with your witty conversation and flawless hair, and you two proceed to fall passionately in love and share your oh-so-quirky meeting story with everyone you meet. In reality, you're probably going to sit in the car with them, have a slightly awkward conversation about where you're going, and then leave. Turns out that them giving you a ride from the apartments to Hilgard on a Saturday morning isn't the most romantic environment. Who would've guessed?

2. Chatty Cathy

Sometimes you like making friends, but sometimes you just need to get somewhere quickly, and until teleportation technology is perfected, it looks like you're stuck with your driver. This driver means well; they're trying to make you feel comfortable and they're undoubtedly bored from driving all day, but this driver just does not let up. When they aren't asking you about where you're going, they're asking every possible question about your major and what you're planning on doing with your life after college. May God have mercy on your soul if you ever find yourself being driven by one of these drivers during rush hour.

3. The wise one

Much like Chatty Cathy, this driver likes making conversation with you, but instead of asking you aimless questions, they're ready to improve your life. Perhaps they were sent from God, or maybe they just really love improving the lives of college kids. At any rate, they're just spouting out gems for you to cross-stitch, frame, and live your life by. Here are just a few examples of advice I've gotten from Uber drivers:

  • “You're an English major? My husband was an English major at UCLA, and he never got a job. You should switch majors. You don't want to be an Uber driver."
  • “After you graduate, go to as many doctor's and dentist's appointments as you can, because they make a lot of money. Dress nicely and make sure you mention that you're single."
  • “You should try to date a lawyer, they make money and they dress well. Try hanging around the law school when you look good."
  • “Don't do heroin. The best drug is a little drink and a lotta women."

I don't know where I would be in life without these sages. Thank you, Uber. Because of you, I now know my true calling.

4. Judge Judy

Sometimes we have bad days, and sometimes we're forced to drive strangers around when we're having those bad days, and thus we come to the judgmental Uber driver. This driver generally pops up when you're Ubering to class or from one side of Westwood to the other, and it doesn't matter what excuse you use (“I'm really late, it's cold outside, it's nighttime, it's raining, I just stubbed my toe and now I'm a cripple") because they are not having it. They had to walk to class uphill both ways in the snow, and now they get to drive college students uphill both ways through the drizzle. Occasionally a grouchy driver will pop up for no reason, but look on the bright side: they generally don't want you to talk to them. No more awkward conversations for you! Just sit back and bask in that awkward silence.

5. The normal person

Sometimes your Uber driver is just a normal person. They look average, they aren't particularly annoying, and you aren't concerned that they're going to drive down a side street and murder you. Luckily, this is the most common driver that you'll get. Sure, it makes for a fairly mundane ride and you won't have anything to hilariously post on social media later, but hey, you'll always have the ride home.

Getting from here to there in Los Angeles can be extremely annoying, and it can often be hard to find ways to keep yourself entertained during the journey. Traffic jams and horrid parking can take the fun out of travel, and Uber and Lyft are helping to add a little bit of adventure to our commute. After all, I believe it was the great American prophet Miley Cyrus who said, “Ain't about how fast I get there. Ain't about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb."

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
