It's 9 p.m. and I need to get out of my house. No particular reason, I'm bored and the Internet is dull.
A majority of my close friends are either on vacation, back at college, live far away, or have jobs that require a lot more sleep than I get. Real struggles of an insomniac. The night is where I thrive.
Although I have recently turned 21, it’s just not time for me to sit alone on the corner of loneliness and self-loathing at the local bar.
And meeting up with that boy from high school …it’s just not a good idea.
Where am I to go?
Starbucks.
Call it what you may. I’m basic. A slave to the corporation. A true Millennial. I’m an asshole who loves spending too much money on mediocre coffee because of what the lady drawn on the cup symbolizes.
To add fuel to the burning fire of my cliché…I’m a writer. And, on this Wednesday night I am a writer…writing…in Starbucks.
* vomit noise*
But, after minutes of people watching passes by, I am presently surprised to see three girls I had the pleasure of knowing in high school. One, whom my senior year, I became quite close too.
These girls, Caroline, Meghan and Ashley graduated two years after I did. They are about to embark on the journey that is their second year of college. They know a lot about how the world works, but not nearly enough. I admire their naivety.
To their good fortune all three of them are smart, funny, talented girls who all have the world ahead of them…and beautiful smiles as well!
As we sat at a small table (eventually getting kicked out due to closing and having to relocate to another small table outside) we talked about a lot.
Our high school, the people (good and bad) who attended, teachers, and all the shit that happened behind closed doors. Some call that gossip…I call it inquisitive discussion.
We talked about college and the differences between it all. How cool we are and how people from college notice. And how people from high school still don’t notice.
It was one of the loveliest conversations I’ve had with a group of girls in quite some time.
Thank you, Meghan, Caroline, and Ashley…for making my Wednesday night at Starbucks a lot better than I ever intended.
