Confessions Of A Dunkin' Donuts Employee

Ten shots of widsom from behind the donut wall

Living Rich with Coupons

A little known fact about me is that I work at my local Dunkin' Donuts when I go home for breaks. I'm sure you're thinking to yourself, "Wow! That must be such an interesting lifestyle!"

...And you're right! For a few months out of the year, I spend my days behind those mighty steel countertops, defending them from skiers, espresso fiends and hoards of hungry customers. Needless to say, it's a pretty exciting time for me.

(It pretty much looks like this every day until I show up)

I'm sure you have a lot of questions about my job and how it works, so this week I decided to share some of the juiciest secrets behind the DD way of life.

1. The Macchiato is just an upside-down latte with more espresso

If you get a new (or lazy!) employee, or if the store is just busy, you will probably just get a latte with an extra shot that's not even upside-down. Sorry!

2. The Cappuccino is just a latte with the foam mixed in

I'm not saying that this is what a cappuccino is supposed to be, but this is what it translates to when you order one at Dunkin' Donuts. Again, I'm sorry.

3. Some employees don't know how to make a latte

Obviously I am not one of them; in fact, I make some of the nicest lattes in town. Unfortunately, a lot of newer employees just don't understand the intricate spoon techniques required to make the drink properly. Order at your own risk.

4. I can't give you 1.5 sugars

I’m not sure if this is common or if there are just a lot of old people in my town, but in any case it isn’t possible. Sorry everyone, but the sugar machine only dispenses in whole numbers. Technically I could hold your cup under the dispenser, press “2,” and then pull it away while the sugar is still falling out. But I’m probably not going to do that. Your best bet is to order it with one sugar and then add a half yourself.

5. Yes, we do get free donuts

This depends on the specific Dunkin’ location, but some places are very relaxed about “employee benefits.” We throw all of the leftovers out at the end of the night anyway.

6. Yes, we all hate the donuts by now

I started working at Dunkin' two years ago, and since then I have not purchased even one donut.

7. The decaf has always been sitting out

If an employee tells you otherwise, they are lying. Unless you go during our busiest hours, chances are nobody has ordered a decaf in the last 30 minutes. On the bright side, I don’t mind brewing a fresh pot if you ask :)

8. If you go during off hours, all of the coffee has been sitting out

It's basically a toss-up after 6:00 p.m. as far as freshness goes.

9. French vanilla, Caramel, Hazelnut and all of the other flavors are just syrups and shots

Maybe I was the only one, but I used to think that each flavor was specially brewed as its own pot of coffee. This is not the case: when you order french vanilla coffee, we shoot french vanilla spray into it and then call it a day. There's nothing special about it, really :(

10. I prefer Starbucks

Straight up.

If we're being serious though, I think that the coffee at Starbucks is much better. Although I'm not a big fan of the way Starbucks charges extra for flavor shots, at least they don't stubbornly continue to use styrofoam cups at most locations. As far as fancies and sandwiches go, you get roughly what you pay for.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
