Annual Zoghby-DeVaney Scholarship Fundraiser

SHC Oktoberfest

This past Thursday, October 1, Spring Hill College hosted OKTOBERFEST, the annual Zoghby-DeVaney Scholarship Fundraiser. This event was held at Fairhope Brewing Company. This event started at 6:30 p.m. and the cost was $40 per person, or $70 per couple, and also included a souvenir mug and first beer. In addition, the silent auction had over 40 items to bid on ranging from a Ruth’s Chris dinner, to a tailored dog obedience package.

Here's what the Spring Hill College website has to say about the scholarship: “In 1995 the Mobile Chapter of the Spring Hill College National Alumni Association named its alumni scholarship to honor a distinguished alumnus, jurist and professor, the Honorable Judge Michael E. Zoghby. In the summer of 1997, James DeVaney, recipient of the Zoghby scholarship, died in an automobile accident. In honor of his memory, the Mobile Alumni Chapter added his name to the scholarship.”

The proceeds from this annual fundraiser are used to provide scholarships for children and grandchildren of alumni living in the Mobile and Baldwin County areas, who, in the opinion of the Chapter, best demonstrate leadership, character, sportsmanship, athletic performance, and general school spirit. The scholarship is applied to the recipient’s college expenses and is renewable provided the student maintains a cumulative 2.5 grade point average.

During this event, alumni enjoyed the live music of a band, as well as food from a gourmet local food truck that was included in the cost of the ticket. There were about 10 beers on tap, and some even made right at the Fairhope Brewing Company. The local food truck had delicious foods such as trout fritters, schnitzel sliders, homemade sweet potato chips, and decadent homemade doughnuts. Attendees were able to enjoy their food while the live band played, as well as enjoy beer in a personal beer mug made especially for this event. Attendees were able to bid on several auction items, and all proceeds went towards an amazing scholarship foundation. This fundraiser also offered badger bus transportation for those who would have rather not driven.

This fundraising event was very successful, and will help future deserving students have a great college experience here at Spring Hill College.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
