Before I begin, let’s address Rotten Tomatoes. Since the writing of this review, the film has been given a 30 percent rating on the Rotten Tomato meter. Most would consider this a bad thing, but some people forget that, at the end of the day, critic reviews are still opinions. And you know what they say about opinions: everybody has one. Take all reviews, even mine, with a grain of a salt and make your own judgments. After all, you can’t really take the opinions of Rotten Tomatoes critics that seriously when they’ve given "Sharknado" an 82 percent rating. But you know, whatever, that’s just like my opinion, man.
"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" is one hell of a spectacular film, but does have some major flaws. For those who don’t know, this film along with Zack Snyder’s "Man of Steel" are DC Entertainment’s response to Marvel’s "Avengers" films. The major problem here with "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" is that it tried to cram almost too much story into one film. Because of this cramming, a lot of background information is really left up to the imagination. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as I feel the imagination helps enhance certain aspects of the story. But, if you have absolutely zero knowledge of the comic book stories of Batman or Superman, you’re left feeling lost during several portions of the film.
This film and the eventual "Suicide Squad," "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League" films are aiming to build a connected DC universe much like what Marvel has done with their films. However, Marvel accomplished something that DC has really yet to do. Marvel, unlike DC Entertainment, has been at this for many years and thus managed to establish a back story for each of their superheroes, eventually leading up to the blockbuster "Avengers" flick. Even if you’ve never read the comics, you care for each superhero in the Avengers because you got to witness their initial struggles and grew with them long before the ultimate team-up happened. With "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice," you don’t quite get this same feeling that many of us got with "The Avengers."
To reiterate: the biggest flaw with "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" is not that there wasn’t enough time but rather there was just too much information for one film. Had we gotten an origin film for Batman and Wonder Woman before this mega flick, I think more critics would’ve been satisfied and more questions would’ve been answered. Perhaps some of these problems will be fixed when the extended edition releases on Blu-ray and DVD. Regardless of that major flaw and some of the smaller flaws, I genuinely believe this was a great foray into a more expansive DC film universe.
Despite the film being mostly about the politics of the universe, it has some of the most bone crushing action I had ever seen in a DC flick. Though the politics may be boring to some, I feel this was necessary as it built tension between Batman and Superman, eventually leading up to the big fight and ultimately giving it far more meaning. Some of the casting choices were questionable, most in particular with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. However, the shining light out of all of this was Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Affleck could potentially be the best on-screen Batman of all time. Some might argue that he is not the best Batman, but he has certainly earned his place amongst the top. He brings the right amount of suave, intimidation and power to Batman unlike any other actor has before. He was perfect!
To summarize this review, there were many elements of the film that shined throughout. Ben Affleck, the action, the pacing, the build-up, the cinematography, the editing and the soundtrack were all explosive in every way imaginable. However, since they tried to cram too much backstory into this one film, it ultimately hurt the story as it was littered with plot holes and inconsistent/meaningless motivations. All in all, I’d say this is a must-see film for any Superman or Batman fan out there but only if you walk in with low expectations. If you walk in expecting the best superhero film of all time, you’ll be disappointed. But fear not, it’s a really good film and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Go out and watch it!
