I'm thankful for dresses and lipstick. I don't mind wearing heels. Makeup is necessary for most occasions. My hair looks somewhat decent when I fix it. But the problem with dressing nicely and looking good is simple—I am lazy.
The last thing I want to do in the morning is wake up two hours early to shave, put makeup on and tease my hair. Let's face it, every girl is the same, if we haven't picked out our "cute" outfit the night before, we better wake up three hours early to try on at least ten outfits and throw them on the floor when they aren't what we imagined in our heads. I loathe being uncomfortable in tight skinny jeans and despise feeling like the spare tire around my waist is showing when I wear a crop top.
Here's the solution to my laziness ...
Embrace the non-fashionable fashion trends.
Seriously, I would like to personally thank whoever the kind soul was that made oversize t-shirts a thing. I thank those girls who argued for our right to wear leggings as pants and all my love to the girl who first put Chacos on and said "I don't care that these shoes are kind of manly, they're comfortable." Claps for the group of girls who braved the judgmental comments together and brought fanny packs back.
Hugs and kisses to the brave lady who decided that a messy bun can truly be an acceptable hair style. I'm best friends with any girl who wears Nike shorts daily. Yoga pants are a blessing, and I will wear them way after they're out of style. I secretly thank Hanes nightly for continuing to make hideous (but ridiculously comfortable) granny panties.
High-top Converse are affordable and really not that special, but I promise I wear a pair almost every day because my feet love them. I think we have athletes to thank for making sports bras the go-to fashion piece, but regardless of athletic ability all girls enjoy the free range of a good sports bra.
These terrible trends that our moms cringe at because we have "a closet full of nice clothes to wear" truly bring girls together. You may not know the girl walking across campus in a 3XL t-shirt, black leggings and high top Converse, but you wish you had her outfit, and you respect her for carrying on the tradition of not caring about what she looks like. Any time a group of girls are together dressed in their Sunday best one topic of conversation is pretty much a guarantee, "I wish I had on my yoga pants and Chacos."
I am a firm believer in the power of a ridiculously great hair/makeup day, but as soon as one of my friends throws out a suggestion to dress like a slob, I'm in.
