If The Choo Fits

A slight look into my love affair with the fashion industry.

If The Choo Fits

Since I started college, I have changed what I wanted to do with my life 3 times. It started with Pre-Med, then International Business and Finance, to Global Supply Chain Operations and Marketing with a minor in Luxury Fashion. Like they always say, the third time was definitely the charm. People see my journey, and they ask me if I just didn’t know what I wanted to do. I usually laugh and respond with something witty. The truth is, I think I always knew this was my calling; it just took a long time for me to stand up for what I loved, and gain the courage to make it into a career.

Fashion is bashed as much as it is praised. It has been called superficial, brand oriented, irrelevant, and a dead end industry.

These are all things said by those who don't understand the complexity of Fashion.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being completely obsessed with this business is that Fashion is everywhere. Whether you believe it or not, even the most careless outfit takes some thought. Not only are they thoughts that one has, but the thoughts of a society around the person. This then indicates the zeitgeist of the time period, which then leads to historical significance. It seems a bit more relevant now, doesn’t it? Now that we have gotten the significance it has to the world out of the way, let’s look at the emotional impact.

It was Christian Louboutin that said, “Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you physically and emotionally.” I have seen this change happen first hand. Right now I am interning at one of the top luxury fashion retailers in the world, Nordstrom. There, I am concentrated in Woman’s Shoes. One of my favorite parts of my internship is the selling. If you are a skeptic of good shoes, take a before and after picture of your face after you finally slip on the perfect pair. If you still don't believe me, spend a day in any of the Nordstrom shoe departments and you will be a changed person. I have seen woman physically have better posture, twirl around the mirror, and smile from ear to ear. Now that is a look of true love.

This goes for anything from a little girl’s love for her floral shift dress, to a man wearing a well-fitted suit for his interview, to the perfect wedding gown on that special day. Fashion is elevating humans all around you. It gives you a feeling of euphoria when it represents you. It is what you are projecting into society as YOU.

When you take this idea of understanding a person to heart, styling people becomes almost second nature. I always get pictures from my friends, guys and girls, asking me to approve an outfit or if they should buy certain things. Ironically, I knew if I were shopping for them that it would be exactly what I would pick out. It represents them. So just to recap - Fashion is everywhere but Style is what you make of it. What you wear embodies what you desire to reflect.

Notice, that there is not a mention of HAVING to wear expensive (yet wonderful) big brand names. You could piece together things from thrift stores around the world for all I care, but it still has an impact. Ralph Lauren said it best when he spoke “Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.”

I adore Fashion. I love what it signifies from the past and what it says about the future. I now know I am in the right industry. And no matter how many times I get concerned looks from family friends and members, strangers who think I’m an idiot for going into this field, and everyone else that thinks that I won't make something of myself in this world of fashion, I refuse to change what I am doing.

Because from that ripe age of 4 years old, I didn’t always know what I was going to do but I always knew what I wanted to wear . That’s how I know I am in the right place.

Just call me Cinderella because in this case, the Choo fits like a glove.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
